Okay which, in your opinion, are the four tricks that every card performer should know?

I don't think that there are four card tricks everyone should know. Perhaps everyone goes through the same steps or similar steps while learning but I think if you look at the performers held in the highest regard, they have unique acts or perform tricks they've made uniquely theirs. There are so many "tricks" in the literature why perform the same tricks?
Guess that doesn't answer your question though. Dave |

The classics that any decent card handler should have at least one variation of....Triumph, ACR, Twisting, Multiple Selection, Card to Impossible Location, Dr. Daley's Last Trick, Reset, Chicaco Opener, Color Changing Deck, Oil and Water, Ace Assembly....the list really goes on and on. The important thing is to take each of these classics and give it something that makes it your own. Take Ambitous Card for example. We all do it. But who would have thought that someone would go on to actually win FISM with an ambitious card routine? But it's been done on more than one occasion by performers who took something we all do, and gave it a breath of fresh air.

Chicago Opener is always the first trick I do. My deck I carry around daily is always set up for it.

Ambitious Card, Any version of Triumph, Any version of Chicago Opener, and an Ace Assembly. But Pepka is quite correct the list is extensive but remember "must" is subjective.

I don't agree with Reset btw. To me it just looks like a bad blur of random moves. A version of reset that I DO like however, is that routine by Jack Carpenter (blabla interchange, can't remember the name). I also don't agree with Oil and Water in a "must know" card trick.
My votes go to : ACR, Triumph, Biddle Trick. |

I can understand your thoughts on the original Reset handling. However, there are MANY excellent variations that have cleaned up many of the herky-jerky moves. The plot is what really matters here. Biddle Trick is one I often forget about and is an excellent addition. But like Robert said, the whole thing of "must" is very subjective.

Desperado is correct. There are no "must know" card effects

I think that there aren't must tricks, but you have to be prepared with kinds of trick:
- Pick a card trick (Triumph) - No pick a card (Ootw) - Super quick blasting effect (Dr Daley's last trick) - Any kind of trick that involve more than one person. (A devilish miracle) For example - Couè test - Ootw - Dr Daley last trick - A devilish miracle One of them if it is a sucker effect is better. |

You need to be careful with "sucker" effects so you don't rub it in the face of the spectator that he was wrong.

I would go for out of this universe and The biddle trick, 2 real knockout effects and both relatively easy.

Tepa's right. Please see Bill Malone's handling of DLT for a perfect example of how to handle an effect that fools the spectator without making them out to *be* a fool.

I would go for a biddle trick, a transposition (my favourite one is in Ammar - ETMCM VOL9), a force (I really like the 'lucky coin effect' fromm card college) and a card to pocket (wallet, fire wallet ).
But this is my choice of the day. If I come back tomorrow I ll think about 4 completely different tricks. Alex |

What nice to read about Devilish Miracle. I never crossed a magician yet who also performed this. Shall we keep this under our tophat |

I think this is a dumb question to ask. Always try to be different. Don't monkey other magicians choices. Make your own. Search your own 4 card tricks.

Justin Devilish miracle redux?
Ronald this is one of my favourite tricks. I used to do biddle trick with a sucker/comedy plot and the devilish miracle has been my natural evolution of the trick. Same effect to the spectator but 2 spectator involved and I think even a bigger impact! |
