On a recent morning train trip into the city, a little girl saw me read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (I occasionally do magic for kids), we struck up a conversation, and I ended up showing her Waving the Aces (Guy Hollingworth) with a charming presentation.

I'm sharing this because I hope there is someone out there who also feels that, just because a trick doesn't work for it's intended audience, or is thrown away because one lacks the required dexterity, with some polish, presentation and subtle misdirection, you can still enjoy performing it. Kids are not very picky audiences.

Have I copped out?

KIDS ARE NOT VERY PICKY AUDIENCES!!!!!

You Lucky B*****d. The ones I know have eyes like lazers, and mouths like the channel tunnel to tell everyone.

Or am I unlucky?

Cheers

Hi,
sorry but I do not quite understand what you are getting at in your post.

why was waving the aces not suitable for your original audiences?

if you lack the dexterity then find an alternative method or STOP performing it in public.

If you think kids are not very picky, you've got a ha-a-ard lesson coming, brother.

It would've been cooler if you floated a feather instead...

Honestly, I must echo what is already being said about kids! They are, arguably, one of the most appreciative audiences you will ever have. They will love almost everything you do WELL for them. However, they are unlike adults who can be polite when they see a flash of card (when you think your gamblers cop is invisible) or see you shift two halves of a deck (when you do your perfect Pass!). No, kids will tell you honestly what they see! If they see you miss something or mess-up something then they will tell you! It’s not about getting the Magician; it’s about expressing what they see.

That you performed a routine that passed muster, one on one, with a youngster tells you that your handling of the routine was even better than you knew! Good show SOL!

If I may say this...

I am pretty sure that Secretsonline has the dexterity to perform the above mentioned effect. I guess I'm seeing into his 'story' a little deeper...

He took the opportunity to bring some magic into the world of that little girl... something that could've been just 'In a Book' for her. Although I'm not certain, Secretsonline was aware of the atmosphere that he and the little girl created... and the magic that he showed her, probably made an impact that she will not soon forget.

Children are 'Picky' many times because we as magicians 'teach them to be'.
What Secretsonline did, was bring a little
'Wonderment' to a child. In that casual setting on the train, she was simply enjoying the 'Wonderment'. His mission, if any... accomplished. BRAVO Secretsonline!!
