I am going to attempt walk around magic for the first time next week. I have three solid effects that I can perform well. Any tips on approaching people? I am planning just to walk up to people who don't appear to be in a hurry and ask if they would like to see some magic.

I wish I had your courage!
All summer I kept thinking to do the same whenever I was strolling in my town's centre, but never actually managed... Let us know how it goes Good luck mlippo |

Hi Extremeninja1:
What venue are you going to be performing in? Is this an organized event/party like a wedding reception or charity event or will you be strolling in an area like a mall or other high traffic area looking for willing spectators? Mark

As Mark said, where you gonna' do this?? Get ready for a LOT of rejection. It might be better to set up a small table and let them come to you.

I will just be walking around in town performing acts of magic . If people want to see it that is... I know that I will probably get rejected a lot but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger

Hi Extremeninja1,
I would suggest, like Jim suggested, setting up a small table. Start doing some coin and card flourishes. Nothing difficult, some false cuts, dribble the cards from hand to hand, practice a “coins across” routine, all the while looking up and smiling at the passer byes. They'll be curious about what you are doing and if you smile and remain approachable you'll end up in brief conversations that will lead to performing magic. Once you get your first couple of spectator's the others will begin to follow suit, you’ll get more comfortable and approachable and then you’ll be on your way. Let us know what you decide and how it goes. Mark

I had though of setting up a table but I am not sure of the laws on performing to a crowd. Do you need a permit in the uk?

Extremeninja1,
I am not familiar with UK regulations. Check around on the internet and/or call your local government office to get more information. Mark

Last year I tried doing some walkaround magic at a convention that I attended.
I just walked up to people (who were bored in line) and introduced myself as the "line magician". I told them that I was there to entertain bored people in line, and then asked them if they wanted to see a quick bit of free magic to make them less bored. That seemed to work amazingly well for me. I was only politely turned down once, out of a few hours of magic. It was fun, and I highly recommend it.

I think from memory you need a busking licence. Granted that means that you would be making money rather than doing it for free. I would ask the local council to be on the safe side, that way you reduce the chance of getting pulled up the cops.

You will get less rejections at bus stops because people are going to have to wait for the bus anyway. Most will enjoy it because it made time go quicker.
Stopping people from the sidewalk is not going to be as easy because some might be in a hurry. I would not recommend a mall for the start because the guard might put you out. A long line of people waiting to go inside of a concert hall as they are waiting for the doors to open will be a good spot. As long as you request no money as tips, it is not required as busking. |

I think Dynamike has the right idea.
