Also check out independent insurance brokers. They can often find a carrier for you.

That's what I was wondering also. However, it may be if giving talks at an event on a clients' site he may have to show more than personal insurance, especially if he is registered as a business in some way. Some companies, and thus in turn their meeting planners, may ask for this insurance.

Every performer and every company doing anything with the public should have insurance. Most venues, promoters & hosts now require it. Most will also want to be included on your insurance rider.

I was doing some research for my dad. I am one of the board members for his ministry.
he was a pastor for 40 some years and full time missionary for the past 15 years and about 3 years ago started his own ministry and speaks through out the world. however he is also writing a book and as I said speaks every where. so now that he is running his own ministry he was looking into if he even needs speakers liability insurance and I thought that on the Café there are some that are speakers using magic but maybe they had some info concerning this type of insurance. thanks for the replies I am doing some more research. sam

Don't forget to check with your local insurance people too. Some of the major insurance companies, like State Farm, Nationwide, Etc, sell small business liability insurance. If not then they can point you in the right direction. Sounds like all he needs is a 'General Liability' policy.

I would suggest an Entertainer's General Liability policy. It can differ from typical small business general liability policies in that it is based on and includes mobile performance, speaking and location venues , plus other aspects either not found or subjectionable in standard policies.
This type of policy is not regularly carried by standard insurance companies. This is what most entertainer and speaker associations recommend. Plus as Kevin pointed out regularly getting certificates of additionally insured is common and standard practice and are usually free as opposed to standard policies. |

I do not carry it for speaking engagements. I see no need, I hate being paranoid about everything and it costing me.

I'd like to post an update on this. Above I recommended Specialty Insurance. I no longer can.
Their customer service and communications fell far short, which ended up costing me a payday. I won't go into details - and yes, I am talking to an attorney. But based on this episode, I can no longer recommend them. Tom |

I've been doing business with James Greene & Associates for many years.
They have insurance programs just for schools and churches. I've never had a problem with them and know for a fact they do pay claims. Tom

I went with the National Association Of Mobile Entertainers.
http://www.NameEntertainers.com They were incredible to deal with and highly recommended by my pro friends. Extremely reasonable and they even cover equipment loss. Doesn't matter if you go through a speakers association, ministry association or private insurer (which I have used) - the key is letting them know what you do and making certain you are covered in the event of a problem. Gerry & Decomposed - carrying insurance has nothing to do with YOU being paranoid. Certain clients require it, or you don't work with them. THAT costs you money. It's about doing business. |
