FYI, Vincent was performing this at the CAM convention here in Canada the last few days - and this blew everyone away that watched him perform it.

I purchased this earlier this week from Hocus-Pocus; when it arrives, I'll provide a thorough review.

One should not write about a prop one has not bought, but owning more than a dozen book tests beginning with MOABT I and II all the way to the Shakespeare Experiment, the feeling I get watching this video is that once again legitimate misdirection of the spec is confused with illigitimate misdirection of the potential buyer. The book store background subtly implies you can use any book which of course cannot be the case. The fishing seems to have been shifted from the first letter to the last, which is ok, but in the demo, where is the fishing? The flashback principle of course also cannot be done in a book store with any book.
Bary, send me a PM if you are looking fo a good book test. In my view you can get the same effect much cheaper and with Harvey Berg you can get a more devastating effect, and believe it or not, I have had tremendous success with one that costs only a trifle: WIAM. The video leaves me more curious about the video than about the product.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I purchased this item; once it arrives and I have an opportunity to get familiar with it, I'll be sure to post a comprehensive review.
I, for one, felt that the demo was actually pretty fair. It's a book test, so filming in a bookstore/library makes perfect thematic sense. Anyone looking deeper into the setting is looking deeper than they have to. I think all potential buyers know that this book test consists of gaffed books; the write-up for the advertisements openly state you receive (3) books for the Babel effect. Based upon what I see in the demo and write-up, I'm pretty confident this will be a quality item. I'm looking forward to playing with it. RS.

I've had Babel for a few days now, and I'm slowly becoming more proficient with it.
In my opinion, Babel is a worthwhile purchase for its versatility. There are a lot of familiar systems integrated into Babel, which allows the performer to not only double-check his work to ensure he's accurately reading a spectator's mind-- but Babel also allows the performer to choose fropm a variety of different revelations. For instance, the same book can be passed to three spectators. One may think of the first word on any stopped page; another may think of any interesting word on any page at all; the last spectator may read any paragraph and simply visualize the scene in her mind. Once done, the mentalist can accurately say what the first spectator is thinking-- he can DRAW a picture of what the second spectator is thinking-- and he can accurately summarize the scene in the third spectator's mind, giving specific names and places and actions read from the book. That, in itself, is a solid 10-minute act using just a few principles offered in Babel. What I particularly like about this book test is that the 'force words' are all interesting, tangible items that can actually be drawn on paper. This allows the performer to not just do a standard book test, but enables him to perform very direct drawing duplications instead. As such, using the books for pre-show work would be ideal for parlor or stage venues. The included three books themselves are all very well-made. They look and feel like innocent paperbacks novels. They are of three different sizes, appropriate for intimate, close-up settings to bigger platform venues. One of the books is specially printed to conveniently force a particular page number, allowing for Babel to be integrated in other commercial book tests or other effects using legitimate, normal books or magazines. This feature facilitates prediction effects nicely: the performer can hand out an envelope in the beginning of a show. He may utilize Babel to force a particular word in an ungimmicked pocket dictionary. The prediction would be completely accurate-- not only stating what word would be selected but what page, column, and entry it would be in the dictionary. This feature would also be useful in several variations of "Pegasus Page" in which a randomly selected page from a book vanishes and reappears in an envelope held by a spectator throughout the show. Overall, I do believe Babel is a top-tier product, and it is evident that a lot of thought was put into its construction. Its various features are all very familiar-- those who currently use Flashback or MOABT will find Babel very easy to learn and adopt into their acts. I think babel would be a great compliment to many mainstream mentalists' repertoires. The interesting thing about Babel is that the systems are all redundant and compliment one another-- if the performer is under pressure and cannot instinctively detemine a thought-of word, various measures are at his disposal to accurately arrive to it. Everything from short words to long words to lines and paragraphs and page numbers are all at the performer's disposal in order to make Babel a reliable asset in a show. Vincent hedan encourages the performer to not memorize and use all the features but rather find a few that legitimately feel "right" and adopt them into the performance of the effect. With that, I believe there's something for everyone when it comes to babel-- it really is one of the most versatile book tests I've seen. After a couple more weeks, I do intend on using this in my shows. To date, I've only had a couple opportunities to perform it in more casual settings like at my home and the local Starbucks. The different variations I performed all seemed to play very well even with minimal presentation. Some memory work is required (as with most book tests), but overall-- Babel is very user-friendly and efficient to use. For those interested, it also notably passed the "Wife Test." Despite being familiar with various props, sleight-of-hand, and techniques, my wife was still completely bewildered by my raw rendition of Babel. Enthusiastically recommended. RS.
