My copy arrived today and it really is a thing of beauty. I have quite an extensive collection of book tests, somewhere in the region of 20 different book tests and this is my favourite by far. My only criticism is the link to the instructions being printed in the first page requiring the first page to be cut or torn out or the link covered up. A small slip with a link to the instructions would have been preferable and probably cheaper to produce than the scratch card in the front page of the book. Other than this minor quibble the quality of the book is outstanding.
The book is absolutely packed with features. It pretty much combines all of the features of MOABT pocket edition, The Master Key and Ne Plus Ultra and adds a very impressive memory demonstration. Yes there is memory work involved but nothing too strenuous. The more features you want to use the more work is involved. However due to the FB principle you could be using it in minutes, a well placed crib would allow you to perform a full book test routine with no memory work at all. In performance you would not use every feature so you can pick and choose the features you want to focus your effort on. Buying it direct from Vincent is the best option as he offers free worldwide shipping and the price is cheaper from him by a good margin unless you are unlucky with the euro exchange rate. For free delivery the speed is decent, it took one week from ordering to delivery. Mark |

Mark,
I'm currently waiting on this and Pi. I got the Stackless version of Pi and have been practicing. I must say, I absolutely love it. Im curious to know if Babel has caused in conflict in regards to learning it and Pi. Are any of your mnemonics getting crossed over or mixed up? |

I've actually put Babel on hold to focus on Pi. They both will fill the exact same slot in my show so I will perform one or the other depending on my mood and other factors. Once I have pi locked in I will focus my attention on Babel.
However for the memory demonstration of Babel the memory work is number based whilst pi is word based so I doubt I will have a conflict. Hmm kind of ironic that the memory system for the book full of words is based on numbers and the system for the book of numbers is based on words. Mark |

I really like Babel as well, it's really versatile book test. The way the l*** words are placed is cool because, if you can see where the spec is looking you can hone down to just a few choices. This goes both ways though, since it also means they are in basically the same place on every page. This compromises the examinability a little.
As to the Ne Plus Ultra type thing - the beauty of Ne Plus Ultra is that each page is truly different. Babel doesn't accomplish this in the same way, and for the divining the gist of a paragraph, I prefer Ne Plus Ultra. But, for the money Babel is super versatile and I love all the options.

I recently bought this myself and I have to say it is a thing of beauty.
It is a remarkable feat of intelligence, planning and patience on bahelf of the creator, Vincent Hedan. The number of possibilities is remarkable - a word, a scene, the 'memory' presentation revealing the lengths of paragraphs etc. And I must say that what further sets it apart for me is the quality of the book. Many b*** T**ts I have (quite a few) are pretty poor quality as books (Outlaw Effects products excepted), in that they look either cheap, too 'pulpy' or odd in some way. This looks like a nice quality literary novel. This immediately makes it more convincing from the off. And if one is presenting it as a memory feat, along the lines of "Here's a book which means a lot to me, one that I took to heart and know like the back of my hand.." (roughly speaking) then it makes it more convincing that the book has the appearance of a quality novel which you may actually love, rather than some airport thriller (I'm looking at you, mother). I have had Mr Hedan's other poetry effect for a few years and loved it - again, a thing of beauty, both in terms of production and creative thinking. This, 'Babel', is of the same fabulously high standards and taste. So thank you! Francis

I got this book 2 weeks ago, the new edition, and I have to say it is what I expected it to be, a fine piece of art.
The pdf that comes with the book is full of nice ideas, and you can use it to close your show, it is that strong. It is also available in French, which is nice if you know how to speak the language and if you want to perform in many countries. Highly recommended. |

I've slayed people with this book test. Love it. Yes, it takes a little more work to use all the features available in the effect, but the extra effort is well worth it. The book has also withstood scrutiny by spectators.

Is the new edition different? Are there different features?

Anyone here still uses this book test? The word "Chapter" has been giving me a hard time.

Never once had a spectator think of the word chapter possibly because it is neither a long or interesting word. How are you instructing the participant to select a word?

Can anyone who has this say whether it allows you to describe a scene or paragraph, rather than just specific words? I have Harvey Berg's Final Exam which promises this but has too much memory work for me. Wondered if this is comparable in terms of memory work?
