I seem to remember reading somewhere about this. I have a couple of ideas but here is the basic premise. Cocktail party and guests mingle and end up in study. Conversation turns to a 1930’s typewriter…….history of owner perhaps……..as we turn the corner out of the room typing is heard. Returning to study a message has appeared on the previously blank paper on typewriter.

Real nice premise and somewhat similar to the idea of leaving a tape recorder (reel-to-reel please!) running in an empty room of an old house. Or scarier still - in your own bedroom when you are out!
Love the idea though, as it is so achievable! A small remote controlled (or time delayed) speaker could be housed in the typewriter. The machine could be covered (for obvious reasons) - the message could already be in there - you could just state that there was no paper in there previously - from the audiences perspective, it would not really matter as the content of the message would be more interesting than any doubts they had over the paper.

Put a Canon Pixma printer in the base under some 8x10 (old size) paper. Feed the top of the page to the roller, rig key sounds (a simple program to count the number of letters in the reply) and print a reply to whatever was actually being discussed in the room Smile It COULD be done...

Don’t think I’d gaff the machine itself (that’s the first thing I’d look at). But a half sheet of paper tucked just under the capstan and covering the already printed message (a la Out to Lunch) could be removed easily when others are distracted or by a confederate as your group is leaving the room. A hidden speaker need not even be close to the typewriter, as the high pitched clicking sounds would difficult to pinpoint from the doorway.

Sounds fun!

Edit:
Or don’t even worry about the cover sheet. Just type the message and roll the paper back down until the print disappears below the bar.
...what if I could read your mind?
