As you probably know, Todd's turnaround time depends upon what run he is working on, which is how he keeps his prices reasonable and controls quality. Xavier doesn't seem to work that way. The price I paid for my Ambivalence is 400 euro. (as to whether that price is reasonable, I'll let you know when I get it!). |

I think the main advantage from the magnet is, that you can flip the gaff in the air enhancing the illusion of singularity, and you can ditch the gaff on a magnetic holdout.
Xavier makes the 3in1 without a magnet, unless you ask him to put one in it. |

It's been six weeks and I am eagerly awaiting my Ambivalence.
I just received an email from Xavier. He apparently just got back from a convention in Italy. Hopefully that means I'll be getting my gaff soon. Alan |

I understand from Xavier that my Ambivalence is has now been posted. It has taken a bit longer than promised, but not much.

Since I am only purchasing the Ambivalence and no matching coins, I doubt I will be receiving the beautiful box, but we will see.

I have finally received my Ambivalence (Morgan) from Xavier. My initial thoughts and comparison are as follows:
No wooden box, but since it was only one coin, I didn't expect one. Surprisingly, no teflon. I have not spoken to Xavier about this about what his thoughts were in not including teflon, but I found it too noisy for my taste until I installed mouse tape, which quieted it down considerably. After installing the mousetape, there is a very slight visible edge (if you know what you are looking for). No such edge without the mousetape, but I prefer the quiet. I have only just received it and it is probably unfair to compare opening it to my Morgan TUC since I have used the TUC far more extensively, so I won't comment on that yet. What I will say is that the leaf (those who have a TUC will know what this is) is about double the size of a TUC leaf. It is still much thinner than a real coin, but it passes more effectively on a mat. When closed, the Ambivalence is hard (but not impossible) to distinguish in handling from a regular coin (unlike the TUC). I anticipate that I will be able to use my Ambivalence as I have my Miracle chip for short periods in a spectator's hand. I received a tail side Ambivalence. Since I didn't specify with Xavier, that was OK, but if you want a Heads side Ambivalence, you will need to order one specifically. My TUC is heads. Overall, I like it and will use it. I will attempt to take photos (and learn how to post them here) when I can, with a comparison to my Morgan TUC. |

Banzai, sounds like you are a little pleased... and a little bit not... with your new Ambivalence. Bummer that you got Tails; doesn't match your TUC so that limits working with both to a certain extent. If I may ask without seeming too rude, how much of a price difference was there between your Ambivalence and your Morgan TUC? Also, do you consider them somewhat comparable in utility? Or do you strongly favor one over the other?
BTW, I'm still using only my half dollar TUCs: two Kennedy halves and a Kennedy C/S. I very rarely use my Ike and my quarter TUCs - actually I never use those two! (The Ike is very, very loose magnetically and I only perform with quarters when I borrow coins from a spectator and I usually don't have the quarter TUC with me on those occasions!) Thanks! Jim |

There is a big difference in price. I bought my Morgan TUC in 2010, so there might be some increase since then, but still, the price difference amounted to some $250 - $300. I tried to buy this used from a member here on the Café, but had a bad experience and had to get my money back from Paypal. At the price these sell for I doubt that there will be many coming up for sale used, so I decided not to wait any longer. I am really glad I did. The Ambivalence is really well made and fits a niche that the TUC leaves unfilled. As stated above, the Morgan TUC can not be handed out at all and is somewhat of a problem flat on a pad or with certain routines. With my Ambivalence, I will be able to have it briefly handled and the thinness of the I****t is less of a problem. It is certainly no 3t, but it is comparable to the thinness of a 3CM. I have to say that I think the TUC gets the edge in ease of use and is just as deceptive as the Ambivalence up close looking directly at the dirty side, that is to say, when closed, both coins are indistinguishable from a normal Morgan dollar.
I do not plan on using these gaffs together as I like to limit the amount of gaffs I use in a routine, so the tail side issue really isn't a problem for me, but I put it out there for those to whom this matters. It takes quite a while to get one of these (both the making and the shipping time from France to the US) and fixing an error isn't a simple matter of popping a return label on a padded envelope. Xavier says he has none of these in stock. I believe he prefers to sell matched sets of multiple coins anyways so that all of the coins have the same look. I did not mean to imply that I am unhappy in any way with my purchase. In fact, I am in awe of the precision workmanship, and as I have said before we live in a true Golden Age of coin gaffs. But if I am going to post here on the Café, I am going to try to be as honest about strengths and weaknesses in a review as I hope everyone else is when they are doing a review. I hope it's helpful. Regards, Alan |
