Just ran across this notice about Tony Spina, that is probably why jblcclbj has not received an answer to his email.

Tony Spina is in a Rehab Center currently.

Are there matching appearing and disappearing canes with the same appearance and same basic length made out of quality metal by the same manufacturer?

I don't know of any.

Back in the 60's some friends of mine who attended a Tannen Jubilee came back and told me about a team magic act where one member of the team seemed to thrust a cane through the back of the partner, making it "go completely through" the partner's body and reappearing in the front, using a combination of the vanishing and appearing cane.

I think as long as there is a decent period of time between the vanish of a cane and it's reappearance, the audience's memory would not notice much of a discrepancy--like vanishing the cane at the beginning of an act, doing a card routine, silk routine, and billiard ball routine, and then making the cane reappear at the end of the act as you take your bow. That makes the vanish of the cane and its reappearance "logical." After all, when you arrive at a formal party, you might likely hand your cane and hat to the butler and then retrieve them from the butler at the end of the party.

Doug, fear guided me to vanish the cane in a rolled newspaper. I did work on the direct vanish, and have not been cut. There is a proper way to hold the cane and form your fingers to reduce the risk of injury.

Another tip is to use this prop as a transformation with full 18" or 24" silks, even a 36" will work well. See Joseph Gabriell"s act his cane to silk streamer as well.

My experience is the same as Anatole describes. The canes don't have to be identical only close in appearance. By close I mean the same color and configuration. They can be a few inches different in length. It will go unnoticed given just a short time between the vanish of one and the appearance of another. The human brain won't register the difference. As an even more dramatic example I used to vanish an assistant and have her reappear dramatically and instantly at the back of the theater. My two assistants were roughly the same build but one was three inches taller than the other and they had different color hair. Two wigs and identical looking costumes and a quick turnaround on the routine and the discrepancy flew right by the audience.

I don't know where he gets them but magicians here on the Café' seems to have black metal appearing canes that are nice and will more than fit your needs (if it is metal you want). I've got one of his and it is as good as any I've played with.

Harry, your post reminded me of the Dick Zimmerman cane and silk transposition from hand to hand. A cane in one hand, and a 24" silk in the other. Now, they change places visually. Looked really magical when Dick Zimmerman did it in his lecture one year. The canes were held by the knob end of the canes. Silks were held by one corner.

Wow! I didn't ever remember that bit. I saw Dick do it in a lecture almost a life time ago too! It was startling, beautiful, and magical. I've never seen anyone else do it even though Dick gave it away. Thanks for the memory.

1) Anyone try this one, where you get a 3rd free if you buy 2? (I need to buy 2) Is this is the same AC as Tannen's?

2) Are Maka Tendo's canes any good? They are black. Are they faster or slower, and larger or smaller (when compacted) than Tannen's canes? See the video in this ebay auction:

1. These are silver metal canes made in India, they are a little thinner metal, they do work. No they are not the same as Tannen's. If you mean do they operate the same, only the method is the same, different release mechanism and they are made in America.

You could order them and try to apply gun black yourself to see if it will work. Did you check with a fire arms store and ask about gun black and see if it is possible to do it yourself or have the store do it for you?

2. These are not Marco Tendo canes, they made in China, don't know anything about them, you would have to buy one and see for yourself. The video is "borrowed" from YouTube files, this is not a video of the actual cane. Marco Tendo canes are made in Japan, and as the video says sold through SEO Magic, if you check their web site, they are out of stock and have been out of stock for some time.

You seem, that you do not want to believe that there is not any quality canes currently on the market as I have stated above. It is true, there are not any quality canes available currently on the market. No black canes either.

I can't believe it either! Smile

I want a high quality set of appearing and disappearing canes that look the same and are available in black with a white top.

Seems like market failure...

When I posted about the last canes that came on the market, some took action and others just put it on their lists. Quality magic props are not like common consumer goods. No one wants to believe this, but it is true.

Loftus/Empire Canes were excellent and those that purchased them are still using them today. And they were at a great price as well, around $70.00.

Buy magic props when they are available, as they will not be available indefinitely. Don't trade them off if you know there is any possibility you will ever use them in the future. Actually, buy a 2nd because you may need a replacement in the future.

Yes, I did believe you when you mentioned that. However, I checked eBay as a possible way to get a black cane second-hand.

I will purchase a silver Tannen's cane tonight, then...was that not considered a high quality cane, just not black?

AND 2 years later I think we all can find canes that are appearing or vanishing... BUT to find canes that MATCH that are of great quality? I don't think they are around.

Any ideas?

Its puzzling to find a great vanishing cane but not able to locate a match appearing one. that's shocking

The appearing cane by its nature usually cannot perfectly match a vanishing cane because the cap on the appearing cane is just white paint on the end of the cane, whereas the vanishing cane usually of necessity _has_ to have a cap.

I do recall that there was once a European cane that when it appeared had what one might refer to as a standard silver cane cap. Tannen might have been the U.S. distributor of that cane. I don't think that cane ever caught on, though. I seem to remember it was a little wobbly when it appeared.

I think magicians obsess over an appearing cane not matching a vanishing cane more than the lay audience does. Done properly, the effect of the appearing cane is so quick that the audience doesn't have time to wonder "The top of that cane looks a little odd!" (On the other hand, if you do Richard Ross's One-Hand Vanishing Cane, the vanishing cane matches the appearing cane fairly closely.)

Does anyone recall an act at a convention once where a magician seemed to thrust a Walsh vanishing cane through the back of his assistant's body and the assistant simultaneously released a Walsh appearing cane from the front of her body so that it looked like a "cane through body" effect?
