So my Tuesday night restaurant has become less busy. I work Saturday nights for the same restaurant, but a different store. They pay me for both nights, (not as much as I would like, but they do).

I want to go somewhere else Tuesday night. I don't know that I will be able to keep Saturday if I drop them on Tuesday. One of the local big chain restaurants asked me about doing balloons for them for free on Saturdays. I did it once to test it out, and I can make more money in tips than both days at my current place.

My pocket says I should go, but my integrity says that I should be paid. Am I being stupid? Is this a golden opportunity to find a better place on Tuesday?

Also, how do I bring it up to my regular place? I kinda feel like a jerk for quitting, but it's 7:00 pm, I'm here for another 90 min and I have the time to post this:/

Alex, for me loyalty goes a long way. That restaurant is paying you and has shown loyalty to you. Maybe talk to the owner about the fact it has slowed down and maybe there is something you can do to market it better to attract more people. For my restaurant I have put up index cards that I printed stating the dates I am going to be there, what I'm doing and my picture. That way when people come in it advertised me and the fact I'll be there. It has gotten me more notariety and helped my night get busier.

The thing I would be concerned about a chain is if they bring you on to try it out, if sales don't increase to therr expections and you could be out of a job. Just my 2 cents

Just some notes to throw out there.

You are currently being paid to be at an establishment. This gives you a moderate amount of security. You noted that things have slowed down on one of the nights, has the management brought this to your attention? If not I would say do not stir the pot and remain where you are.

If they have brought it to your attention then they have also considered the possibility that you are being paid for no real reason. You would need to attempt to negotiate a new agreement with them. Explain that things have slowed down on tuesdays but have been going great on saturdays. Perhaps if they were to put more focus into making saturdays "family night" they would see a greater increase in business. This will seem noble and will give the impression that you also have this establishments best intrests in mind. I assume that you have established some sort of relationship with the management so an act like this should not be met with them just dropping you cold.

On the topic of the other resturant. I do not believe you should work free. Tips are fleating. One day it could turn out that a millionare convention is in town and in another you just have the regular blah. The point is that you cant be completely sure. I would explain to there management that you will work for a trial period on the tips. If for a couple weeks you are still pulling in regular numbers I would say go with it. Also consider a parted deal. This would mean that you would charge per hour but any tips you gained working would be deducted from what the establishment would have to pay (you keep any excess). This lets them know that you expect a minimum but if things continue to be as good as they are then the resturant will have to pay nothing and they wont have to worry. I would discuss this with the management before you mke any action. Just something to think about.

I agree that loyalty goes a long way but at the end of they day you have to make a living. Be sure to test the waters and try not to burn any bridges you may need to cross again.

Keep looking and you will find a place with great tip AND pay.

You already found a place that pays and another place with good tips.

Now look some more and find both!

Another option is to keep both on seperate days.

Thanks for the replies. That was kinda initial feeling about the situation, I just needed to put it in perspective.
