The Library of Congress has some old magic books, long out of copyright and free for the downloading, like Prof. Hoffman.
A membership in the Conjuring Arts Research Center, for less than $100 a year, will grant you access to the following magic magazines and show business newspapers: ABCs of Magic Sets Abracadabra Bat Bibliographies (includes auction catalogs) Billboard (Circus, carnival & show business news, later Billboard turned to all music) Chap's Scrapbook Conjurer's Monthly Magazine Early Books Erdnase Genii Gibeciere Goldston Annual Goldston's Magician Goldston's Quarterly GRMT Hugard's Magic Monthly Ibidem Il Prestigiatore Moderno Jimmy Grippo Jinx Jon Racherbaumer Books L'Escamoteur L'Illusionista L'Illusionniste Linking Ring Locke's Conjuror's Magic Circular Magic, Inc. Books Magical Bulletin Magical World Mahatma Many Faces of Magic Miracle Factory Books MK Ultra M-U-M (SAM decided to go out on their own and produce their own magazine after a long association with Genii) New Conjurors' Magazine Perennial Mystics Public Books (out of copyright or negotiated for use) Selbit's Wizard Seven Circles Sphinx Stanyon's Variety (historic)(This magazine is great if you like to track the old Illusion show routes and be in on magic and show business gossip) http://conjuringarts.org/store/memberships And you can get old magazines on CDs for your very own here: http://midwestmagic.net/ And you can get books on CD, like Tarbell, and magazines here: http://www.lybrary.com/

I have a cupola of other links I will share after I get permission from the principals.
As far as buying, not everyone has a lot of money in this economy and magic is one of the more expensive hobbies, like photography. And with the "I gotta have everything mentality" one can quickly lose interest when they see they cannot afford what they want. A good background in the history of the workings and apparatus, easily obtained from many free books like the Hoffmann's, may convince people they do not need everything. History is also an important part of many magazines, easily obtained with a membership in Conjuring Arts, more so, there are tens of thousands of tricks that are free for the taking when you consider a membership for less than $100. Jinx alone has a lifetime of mentalism effects, as does Hugards with card tricks. A trick today, or even one book, can cost more than a hundred dollars. Why spend so much for so little?

The funny thing is that beginners would not take advantage of this and be grateful - it's the seasoned magician that will get the most value because we know what to look for, that's one aspect.

Also have to say that one of my favorite learning books is Harry's Close-Up Card Magic. While you might not find it easily, I was happy to see he has an e-book for just $16! That is worth way more than what you're charging, Harry! |

The best thing about having such a selection for free is that I can browse. I have found that by not having a place to check the books out in person it is a very difficult choice to make. Having these free books to help me understand the direction to go in the book market is an excellent idea and it should really help out in the long haul. The only downside I see is the hours reading so many books.

Spartacus,
Thanks, Frank Posted: Mar 30, 2012 4:19pm There are also quite a few of them available from Google Books: http://books.google.com/books You want to type in your keywords to search and then click (in the left hand column) "Free Google eBooks" to narrow it down. Frank |
