Bizzaro & Kyle Marlett are in Florida and did a lecture in Clearwater last Thursday. I knew of Bizarro but hadn't heard of Kyle before. Probably many others haven't heard of Kyle yet, but I think his name will become more familiar to many in the future. The lecture was great.
One of the highlights for me was Bizarro's Color Changing Sponge Ball along with his sponge ball routine. I'd seen the demo of this trick when it was introduced a couple years ago. I didn't buy it then. I thought the video looked too good and the method might be overcomplicated and difficult to perform. In real life it looks just as good as the video- it's very visual and the method is very simple. It will take a small amount of practice to make it look as good as he does but just a little. Another of my personal favorites was Bizarro's Non-Toxic- a bottle of glue similar to Elmer's Glue. A stream of white glue is squirted almost anywhere- into your hand, your mouth, a hat- and it vanishes. You have to buy the props for those two items, but they are very reasonable and well worth the cost. One of the things that required no purchase (other than perhaps the lecture notes or a DVD if your memory isn't good enough to remember all the good stuff) was Suckit: a selected card is returned to the deck and the deck is placed in the case. A soda straw is pushed into the case and the selected card is *visibly* sucked out of the case through the straw and into your mouth! Another was This N' That- a bottle production that looks similar to 'This'- buy much cheaper and you can make it yourself. Using the same bottle that was produced he did a bottle vanish in paper bag. I thought it was a Nielsen bottle, but it wasn't (it wasn't even a gimmicked bottle). And there was more- my memory's not good enough to list everything he did, but it's good enough to remember that there was no filler or pipe dreams- it was all good. Kyle's portion of the lecture was equally good. He performed (and explained) his routine which combines a torn and restored newspaper with the production of a coffee, a sugar (salt) pour. No new earth-shattering methods, but some original ideas combined with some modifications to old methods all put together in a very nice routine. He taught 'Start the Music'- an opener he uses that's a visual vanish of a music CD. And there was 'Chapped'- a very nice version of bill to impossible location- in this case a tube of Chapstick that's very cleanly shown at the beginning. The highlights of Kyle's part of the lecture for me was two new effects that are about to hit the market. My favorite was Flipcup. Flipcup is a gimmick that allows you to cause a (vanished) spoon, soda straw, coffee stirrer (or other items) to instantly and visibly appear in a paper cup (which you can get at McDonald's, 7-11 or other places that sell fountain soft drinks. This is an idea that I haven't seen before and it can be used in so many ways. He also has an idea for Bottle Thru (Spectator's) Body that really takes that effect to a new level. It's a very simple idea, but it increases the impact of the effect more than you would think. He explained the method along with his improvement, but you do have to have the standard gimmick for this effect. He sells a DVD teaching it along with the gimmick. Overall this was a great lecture that rates right along side many of the other great lectures I've seen in the last 50 years. My only regret is that since they were both doing the lecture, each could only do about 1/2 of what they normally do in a full lecture. So I'm looking forward to seeing them again in the future so I can see the 2 1/2's that I missed. |
