I have also made a few minor stylistic changes, but I tried to keep the meaning, as I think it is a very powerful story. My version is below: After the Spanish conquered Antwerp (Belgium) in 1585, a few weavers escaped to London. Among their few belongings were old wisdoms, aphorisms they turned to often for guidance, communicated verbally or written in pamphlets, almanacs and on scrap paper. These insights are all are compiled into this work,.... (place name of almanac you are using), a source of protection and wisdom. In September 1666 London was devastated by a huge fire. An area of 182 hectares was burned to the ground. Ten people were killed and 69 churches destroyed in the blaze. The inferno raged for days and the residents could only watch as around half of their city was reduced to ash. Many Londoners sought refuge in the monastery in Blackheath, in the East End of London. Among them was a family of Flemish inheritance, who were no strangers to hardship and deprivation. Head of the family was Joseph Van der Lippen. 90 years before, in 1575, his great-grandfather Johannes had lead a similar group of homeless refugees to England, to find shelter from the Inquisition. Joseph Van der Lippen bore an old memento with him, inherited from his great-grandfather. He consulted it regularly because it gave him strength, hope and consolation. The memento was a very small book that could be read in many different ways. Because it was compiled out of loose leaves, the order of the pages could be changed. It contained a wealth of aphorisms and the paper was worn rough and ragged through years of use. This book was (the almanac you use). Once the wisdom of elders’ thoughts could only be handed down verbally, later they were written and collected to be read in times of need. With the invention of the printing press, many copies were spread all over Europe. One such copy is in our hands tonight....
