Angelo,

Perhaps you would like to share with us how you began your relationship with Tenyo of Japan? Can we expect more effects from Tenyo that you have designed?

Thanks in advance! Smile

I have always loved Tenyo Magic from a very young age. My fascination of creating magic as opposed to performing magic led me on to the path I am now. Tenyo was and is a huge influence of my type of magic - gimmicky as opposed to sleights. I created many Tenyo prototypes out of balsa wood and polystyrene. Eventually I had over a dozen prototypes.

A friend of Hiroshi Kondo (named Mark Setteducati) suggested I contact Tenyo which I did. I think Mark put in a good word for me too! I contacted Tenyo and informed them about the tricks I had created. They requested a video performance of some of the effects which I complied with. They were impressed and so they stopped off in London to see my effects live, prior to continuing their journey to FISM in Dresden. This was around 1997. You can see photos from that meeting here: http://www.tenyoworld.co.uk/mytenyogallery1.htm

I showed them a total of 13 effects. They selected 5 to take back with them - one of which was Mini-Morphosis. As a result, it was released as part of the 1998/1999 range. From there over the years a couple more were released. Prison Box was next and Floating Card was after that.

I do have two more ideas I want to pitch to them so I must hurry up and make my prototypes as they have already made their selection for 2013 otherwise I would have to wait until 2014. If mine are good enough they may take out one of theirs from the 2013 range and sustitute it one of mine.

Fingers crossed.

Do you have any explanation about the fact that Mini Morphosis was discontinued very fast while "Prison box" is still produced ?

They just run for 2 or 3 years and that is it. I don't know the main reason. I have never asked Tenyo. Maybe I should.

Hi Angelo. Outside of your own cool creations what is your favorite Tenyo effect and why?

Cheers,

Collaboration with Tenyo did not seem to be very close. In fact once they accept a trick, you sell the idea and they continue the rest of the production, design, modification, all alone on their side ? Is that ?
Can you give us an estimate of about how many copies of "Prison Box" have been sold ? By making a research for the blog I have always struggled to succeed in having an idea, however vague, of the volume of production of a trick. Tenyo is a completely unique company in the realm of magic and it's sad not being able to learn more about the history of this success. But may be it's something taboo.

I do get updates on the process once they are working on a trick such as photos via email etc.

I honestly don't know how many of one item has shifted. Again it is something I would need to ask.

Well... I think we will not have many answers or details for this collaboration. Thank you anyway for taking the time to respond Angelo Smile

Maybe you can give advice for people who want to create a trick for Tenyo. What are the most important things, the details to which one does not necessarily think but are essential for Tenyo and their method of manufacture.
Between 13 magic tricks Tenyo have take in Japan, you have been surprised at the choice they made finally, you thought they would take tricks rather than some others, have taken those you find the best ?
The trick with deck of card that is cut in half, he is the one you hope to see product by Tenyo in 2013?

For people who pass through here and did not usually go to the Tenyo forum, I leave blog address that I created on the Japanese brand for the curious.

Hi John!

Some of my favourite Tenyo include Ninja Experiment (I love the use of the mirror), Birdwatcher (seems impossible and love the kicker when you can tell the sum even with the cards in the case), Sidetrack (very deceptive method), BioShock (always gets great reactions) and Mirage (cool method).

I have expressed that there is some degree of input/collaboration after my prototype is in Tenyo's hands but not a great deal. This is how they choose to work and I fully trust them and what they do. I can only give you answers what I know Smile

As for advice on creating a Tenyo trick, something you may be surprised to know is that they prefer if the trick has stages (a beginning, a middle and an end). Not all Tenyo releases have stages/phases but they prefer it. Also the trick must be ideally easy to do with no sleights. Not too big in size either.

Yes I was surprised by their choice of my 13 effects. The ones I thought they would be interested (which in my mind I thought had Tenyo written all over them) they did not take and the ones I thought they would not take they did. A big surprise.

As for the deck cut in half trick, Tenyo did make a prototype of it out of wood but then dismissed the project because the method utilised a material that could perish over time. However the good news is that I am having someone else make it and already have a prototype.

Hi Angelo.

Can you tell us something more about the other effects?
Did you release them yourself or did anyone else? Or are the prototypes just collecting dust somewhere? And most important, what were the effects?

Yes they are mainly sitting in my cabinet collecting dust.

Some of the effects shown in the meeting include:

Zig Zag Deck (examinable deck)
Card Twister (photo of prototye is in my Genii cover story from March 2010 issue)
Demi Deck (cut and restored deck, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbLbaxH5m2s - in the works to being made)
Squeeze Thru (ring penetration, in some Fantasma Magic sets, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKOxIIm4bBE )
Marked Coin Transposition (on a raised platform)
3D version of One Ahead Occult Board/Menta Marvel (folded slips of paper)
Cut and Restored Playing Card (examinable card)
Block Through Sword Penetration ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-rw73r0f-I )

It is a shame really as some have Tenyo written all over them such as the Block Through Sword and Card Twister.

Photos of them can be seen in my old Tenyoworld website in gallery.

The Block Through Sword looks great. I really hope Tenyo or another manufacturer will once produce this! Keep us informed Smile

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
