Richard Alan Simmons was a screenwriter and executive producer of TV shows like “Columbo,” “The Dick Powell Theater,” “Adventures in Paradise,” and “Shirley Temple Theater.” (He was not the same person as the TV exercise guru, and as far as I know, no relation.) A few of his scripts incorporated magic as a central theme, such as the Columbo episode “Murder, Smoke and Mirrors” and the Dick Powell Theatre episode “The Great Anatole.” That last TV show was the one that prompted me to use "Anatole" as my MagicCafe user name.
I have always felt that Curt Jurgens's performance as "The Great Anatole" is the all-time best television/film interpretation of a practitioner of our art, and I think Dana Wynter as his assistant was the all-time best television/film interpretation of of a great magician's assistant, classily dressed in an evening gown rather than tights. I think both of them could have won the top award at most magic convention contests, including the IBM Gold Medal and the FISM Grand Prix. Their "Film-to-Life" presentation was especially _outstanding_! Jurgens was the quintessential "actor playing the part of a magician." I am also curious as to whether Richard Alan Simmons was a member of any magic societies. Any biographical/background information would be appreciated. There is a long list of credits to his name at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com . His dates at the IMDB are 1924-2004. Does anyone know if Curt Jurgens was a member of the Magic Castle or any other magic organizations? ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
