As Pete said and others agree mentalism seems the best bet. Also I would suggest without getting specific they tend to like "cute" tricks as well.

Mentalism and mind reading feats work better with females. Also figures show women are more lightly to believe in physicist and fortune tellers. Every one loves sponge buunies. Perfume rather then wine? I don't know in a gathering of women a bottle of wine goes down well.

I find that guys prfere card magic a lot more than the ladies do. Be intrested if that just me that feels that way.
Enjoy your magic,

and let others enjoy it as well!

Consider an effect utilizing money. Preferably, large denomination currency.
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

Polaroid money
Money that magically appears from your wallet is always expected... Did I say expected? That was a Freudian slip. I meant to write, Expected.

I find the hat tear plays well when there are women present.

My wife is not a big fan of magic. But there is something very cute about Daryl's "Audio Transposition" which may be appealing for a close-up program for women I'd think. I just purchased this effect at Michigan Magic Day last week from Daryl himself. It is wonderful to perform, fun, easy to do, and actually entertaining. My wife liked it-and she is by far my biggest critic. Better maybe to see Daryl in his lecture discuss it and then search around and buy your own props, unless you are too lazy like I am to look around for the items needed, and prefer instead to pay Daryl top dollar for the simple, inexpensive props actually used in his excellent routine. I figured it was worth it for me to have fun with it right away, as the price of the trick far exceeds the actual retail value of the props used obviously.

I like Audio Transposition ALOT as it does not use standard "trick" items like cards or coins. And at least my longsuffering wife Maggie of many years, who has seen a ton of magic performed, really seemed to enjoy "Audio Transposition." Cute routine on being one's "first magic trick" performed- makes sense in a "I am pulling your leg" kinda way. I know Al above was also at this same lecture, what did you think of "Audio Transposition"? One magician I was with said he loved the trick too, but was going to shop around town first to see if he could get his own props cheaper which he may or may not be able to find someplace?

Go to http://www.daryl.net -Daryl has a nice video of himself doing the routine there. So I highly recommend this effect for any situation where there may be a lot of ladies present. But note my observation this trick in my judgment is pretty pricey if you are also buying magic looking for good "prop value".

But for me, Audio Transposition was worth the 40 bucks for a useable routine I can do right away and have fun with with my minimal skill level. It is like Dean's Box (also one of my favorites)- that particular trick is very expensive to purchase (obviously much more than the actual manufacturing expense I'd guess) but well worth it as you can actually have a very nice effect to use in various settings, is a little "different" and very entertaining/baffling for a lay audience. Folks of all ages and genders seem to like Dean's Box too.

May I offer you a suggestion for performing for female audiences?

Viking makes a BEAUTIFUL yet deceptively unobtrusive prop called the "Viking/Becker Chamelon Chest".

http://www.vikingmagic.com/?nd=full&key=153&myaf=af_mm

One of the routines contained along with the intructions for the prop is a prediction of a certain item bought at a certain store for a certain price. This is, essentially, the old triple-threat prediction all dressed up in a grovery shopping theme.

To do this effect you use the box to collect notes from female members of the audience that contain names of various grocery stores, grocery items and prices......they are are collected and put in the box by an auidence volunteer, then a second volunteer opens the box, selects three different notes, and the rest is all presentation.

One of the great things about Larry Becker's stuff is the depth and quality of the focus of his presentation of mental magic.....with a unique spin...and his instructions and books/lecture notes, etc. certainly reflect this.

Yes, mentalism DESTROYS civilians!!!

This question is more than a month old but reading the replies I can't believe no one asked ....

.. what is the approximate age range of the audience and the social demographic
(I know it's not proper/nice to ask a ladies age but for planning purposes)

It would influence some of the material I might choose, what I'd perform and how it would be presented would be different for an audience of 20 & 30 somethings from what it would be for an audience of more mature women (say 45+)
As well as what I'd perform and how it was presented for the county club set would be different than what I would do for a urban college audience

The advice to go with your strongest material sounds good

There is a piece I put in my show about 9 months ago and am getting very good reactions, especially from women
but sorry I'm reluctant to share ;-(
With that said if there are close friends or close family members attending your performance you can present Anniversary Waltz to highlight the bonds that will last forever between them

Everyone showed great restraint, intelligent and good taste by resisting suggesting the sponge dong (at least publicly in this thread)

So .... have you performed this show yet? If so how did it go?

Come to think of it, I'm performing for a French Circus Baby Shower (researched it and looks like a great theme) in June so am in a similar situation again

What's wrong with women that they can't enjoy a "normal" magic show?
Nothing!!! My opinion... Just do your freaking show.

Anyone that starts looking around for new tricks, old tricks, substitute tricks to perform for women or any specific audience is then
giving a lesser show; aren't they? Or is your show just a string of trick, trick, trick with no cohesiveness??

I just don't understand people wanting to toss out an act they're supposedly worked on for decades and substituting in tricks they don't do very often, if at all, unless you're a complete amateur without an act in the first place.

Just do the same magic you'd do for any audience of their age and lifestyle.

Sticking to roses, perfume bottles, and other "ladylike" things will probably be perceived as condescending. And just plain icky.

How do I know? I'm female.

Hmmmmmmm

I would go along the lines of what most men would refer to as chick crack(things which females are mystified about , fortune telling in general ,astrology, tarots , palmistry ,even giving a cold read depending which fingers they have rings on , and then do a ring on rope or a wedding ring transpo.)

just use your imagination you can even go with dream interpretation and then lead them into a dream you just had, you can create some very deep intimate and intense moments

I think that a good option is performances like those of Wayne Dobson, see for instance:
