Right, here we go...review one.
Packaging: It arrived this morning and the first thing that struck me was that the packaging is good quality. The booklet I received had a typo so Bryn might want to correct that as it detracts slightly from the overall quality of the packaging. Impact on the Spectator: This will get great reactions, as other versions of this same effect that I perform do. Portability: Very portable, being nothing more than a business card. Ease Of Performance: Easy to do, but practice is essential for stage one. What You Get: Everyone who knows another version of this effect knows that it consists of two stages. For stage one Bryn provides good advice and clear instructions. Personally I found nothing new in this stage of the effect which was a disappointment, however, I do know that some people will appreciate the good advice and detail given here. The main difference between this effect and other versions of this effect I have seen, read about or devised myself, is in stage two of the effect. This difference is a great and useable idea that Bryn has obviously thought out carefully. I am, however, a little surprised that this has not been published before, for example in a magazine. Unfortunately the card can not be handed out 100% of the time which is a letdown, but still the methodology works great and looks a lot cleaner than I thought it would when I read the instructions. At the conclusion of the effect you do provide a correct written prediction every time the effect is performed, so this is a bonus (one version that I do does not always have a written prediction and I think that written predictions are the strongest). Price: The price is not a lot of money and combined with Bryns money-back guarantee, this means you can't really lose. Overall: The effect is a great one and this methodology is pretty good. I hope Bryn has really done his homework to make sure that this method has not appeared in print when used for this effect before and if this is the case I sincerely wish him all the best with it. Bryn,
Although I've never seen your version of this effect, it almost sounds exactly like Scott Guinn's version from his book It's More Magic. I've been using Scott's version for a while now and have been getting phenomenal responses! AND, much like yours, I am always right. You may want to check with Scott to make sure that it isn't the same...he is always around as he works here. You can also PM me if you'd like. |

Hi Ade,
Thank you very much for taking the time to look at this and I'm glad you enjoy. As far as "stage one," as you put it when you stated that I provided good advice and clear instructions, I feel that those that CAN provide their own additional touches, will, and that those that stick with the stock patter still be very well served as I've stood on some tall shoulders to combine what I provide in stage one. As far as "stage two" goes, thanks for the compliment on the clean methodology! As stated in the ad the card CAN be given out afterward and more than half the time the card can IMMEDIATELY be given out without doing anything "fishy" and even if the secret-something for handing it out needs to be done I'm sure no one reading this here would have any trouble. To answer the question about TOTAL originality, and to address nalu_magic's post, as well: I feel the credits detail quite well my inspirations and I am surprised that this method for this effect hasn't been combined together myself. PIECES have seen print, as far as I know, PARTS have seen video, but I am totally unfamiliar with the component being combined with my self-contained methodology used to create this effect. While I can't have read EVERY mentalism book out there where somthing would have been "burried"—and this would certainly not have been burried!—I have never seen this effect up for sale nor seen this effect in print in any major magazine. There ARE some SIMILAR effects out there but I've never seen this in totality before..."Phase One" may be familiar to some but "Phase Two" will be new to many... As far as "homework" prior to the release of an effect, I totally agree. When I put out my "CASINO'S DECK & KIT!" I even got permission from Larry Becker prior to release because ONE of the routines in the included book had a similar THEME to Casino Royale. Again, thanks for the review! Bryn,

Hi Bryn,
I just went to your link to check out the effect and it indeed is different from Mr. Guinn's second phase of the trick. Good luck with your new effect! |

Thanks, Lalu. I thought it would be. I'm sure his is GREAT but mine would be...DIFFERENT.
Yes, I hope, too, that this entire thread can be moved to the "GOOD BAD GARBAGE—Tricks and effects for review" (I THINK it can since others than me have reviewed the effect) Thanks! Thanks much for your orders... I hope the other reviews mirror Abe's, (Sludge's) as well of "BusinessCoin". Bryn

I received this today, and while I want to wait until I've had a chance to perform it for a few people before writing a full review, my initial impression is that it's a winner.

Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

Thanks Quinn. A bunch of orders have gone out in the last couple of days so hopefully there will be some additional reviews shortly. I liked your PM ideas regarding your new business cards, as well.

You may want to check out John George's Magic Volume One for a very similar effect although the methods may be completely different. Good luck with the product.

I just reeived a nice Email from Richard Busch, whose work I admire. To paraphrase he told me "It's certainly worth the money and easy to understand—I do like it." And he also gave me some additional crediting ideas which will certainly go into future printings of the instruction sheets! Perhaps as time allows he will post here.
And thanks for the reference, Segal. Some of George's stuff seems interesting. There are some similar EFFECTS to this but this applies some different methodologies together for the final outcome. Bryn,

Well I just received the bussinnes coin prediction,
I think is a nice idea , packs small, and it is certainly worth it´s price. plus if you don´t like it Bryn gives you back the money. I feel you wont need to do that. As someone already pointed, you cannot always give the card, and this is the only minus I see. Because you are doing an effect with your card and I think most people will like to keep it. But most of the time you have an small miracle in your hand, with your bussiness card, wich they can keep at the end. Very nice, very comercial. I´ll try it in my restaurant on people and I will post some more info here afterwards, Bryn, congrats and I wish you the best.

Sludge gave a very thorough review with which I agree. I'll try not to be redundant, but I'd like to bring some additional points to people's attention.
First, as many surmised, BusinessCoin Prediction is very similar to several other effects available, notably Max Maven's Positive-Negative. If you're already familiar with one or more of these effects, BusinessCoin Prediction will feel more like a variation than a new effect. But it's a nice variation, and well worth its modest price. The difference is that with BusinessCoin Predciction, you can always show the entire card (although you can't always hand it out), which isn't true with Positive-Negative. In other threads, some people have stated they felt Maven's out was contrived. By using a clever gimmick, Sgt. Reynolds has eliminated the need for this out. Second, it should be pointed out that you'll have to make your own gimmick. But don't let this frighten you. The gimmick is easy to make in the extreme, and costs pennies in material. |

Thanks for the reviews, guys - all are dead-on accurate from I've read so far.
Rgranville - Is what you mean in your last sentence that "you will WANT to make up your own gimmick if you have your own business cards" ? I supply it all set up and ready to go using MY business card, but if you have your own of course you will want to transfer it over. Thanks, Bryn

Sgt. Reynolds is, of course, correct. The gimmick is supplied using his business card, and you can certainly use it. On the other hand, if you can't think of a justification for having the business card of a member of the Washington County (New York) Sheriff's Department, you can easily make the gimmick with your own business card. And I want to emphasize that making it is easy. It will take you just a few minutes, and cost next to nothing.

I just received this effect today and have not used it, but I like it. As has been pointed out by others, while very similar to Positive-Negative, it does address some of the issues with Max Maven's effect through the use of a gimmick.
(Side note: nalu_magic mentioned Scott Guinn's fix for Positive-Negative. Bryn's is completely different. Scott's does not use a gimmick.) The packet Bryn provides is very well done. It looks very professional and the instructions are quite clear. Bryn obviously put a lot of thought into this. While he could easily offer this as a PDF file, that approach would eliminate the sample card, which I think is a very strong selling point. When I first looked at the card, the gimmick fooled me. Knowing that, I'll not hesitate to use it. If I'd not experienced that, I may have doubted its deceptiveness. The small touches and psychological reinforcers really strengthen the effect. In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I was given a free copy. Even so, I think this is definitely worth the small price Bryn is charging, and given the quality of the write-up and the inclusion of a sample card, he could easily charge a few dollars more. I'd recommend buying it before he realizes this and tacks on a couple bucks to the price tag. Very nice work, Bryn. Thank you! |

Thanks for taking the time to type up a review, Paul.
The reason I'm selling this as a ready-to-go gimmick as opposed to a PDF is two-fold: 1) Many people DON'T have their own business card and this comes all set up and ready to perform (albeit on MY business card, which could lead to some fun patter possibilities!) 2) As Paul mentioned above, the gimmick can be very deceptive and sometimes its nice to get "fooled" by an effect prior to performing it for an audiance as then you have an idea of it's deceptiveness & impact from a spectator's perspective. Regarding pricing, I think the $8 postage-paid price is fair (EVEN THOUGH I JUST NOTICED PAYPAL IS CHARGING ME 67 CENTS FOR EACH TRANSACTION ) LOL - no big deal; PayPal is well worth it for it's simplicity and ease of use. All said and done I make about $5 each off these and they are something I enjoy making. Bryn,

I would just like to second everything Paul Menzel said, and contribute nothing.
But seriously, I've had the effect for a few days, and had the chance to perform it a number of times yesterday. It played great every time. The handing out of the card is essentially a non-issue; sometimes you can do it without even thinking, other times it will require a very simple action which, if you aren't prepared to do, you should probably reconsider this whole magic thing. As for the deceptiveness of the gimmick, not only did it fool me when I first looked at it, but it did so even though I had correctly guessed what it was in advance. I took a look at it, thought, "Oh, I must have been wrong," then felt quite foolish when I realized I hadn't. Not only is it visually deceptive, but its justification is well thought-out and logical. As has been noted, there are already several approaches to the imaginary coin prediction out there, and more on the way (he said, cryptically). They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and which one you prefer will be largely a matter of personal taste. With that in mind, this one has several points that make it worth considering: • All the outcomes are direct and straightforward. • While a gimmick is required, it's extremely simple, will last for many performances, takes up almost no space, and costs virtually nothing. • Bryn's advice on the psychological aspects of first phase of the routine is solid. Those new to the idea will be started off on the right foot, while more experienced performers will probably find themselves nodding in agreement. • The price is definitely right. I can think of certain creators (I won't name any knames ) who probably would have charged at least twice as much. Like a few others, I was given a free copy of the effect for review. Having now tried it, I would have been perfectly happy if I had paid the meager asking price for it. Quinn
