This is a very scary idea, and it seems to be true. I actually didn't think about the words until after I read it. HMMMM! Well, I guess it's time to give up the teaching gig.

For the first couple of lines I was REALLY starting to worry about Caleb. I've read many of his great posts and this one REALLY got me worried for a moment. As I continued to read every mispelled word I'd quickly glance over at the avatar of a smiling Caleb with sun hat. That smile coupled with the bizarre spelling....loonies can smile and usually do a great deal ya know...I continued to worry until the last two lines. LOL!
Thought our friend had turned into a Bizarre lifeform rather than a practicing Bizarrist. |

It's almost true, but not quite.
Our minds are good at shifting between tasks in order to help comprehension -- and in this case we are seeing that each word is misspelled, but we have a "proofer" in our brains that pulls context, and allows it to fill in the blanks of what you wouldn't understand on the words alone. For example, "You slay me" is a phrase that is somewhat out of date, and personally, it took quite a while for me to "catch on" to what it is supposed to be. (The gray matter got stuck on the fact that "Sally" is a pretty common name.) From/form would also be a problem for English readers if context can't help them out. So keep your spell checkers handy because (despite my best efforts) we still have to have a certain amount of correct spelling to get our ideas across. Bill |

Bill, I think your analysis of what's going on here orthographically is about right. In the example given from the Times, ambiguious spellings are largely avoided, which makes it very much more easy to comprehend.
Randy, I think your analysis of what might lurk behind the Caleb Strange sun-hat and smile is about right, too. I know this isn't the forum, but there's probably a plot for a mental effect here - off the top of my head, someone reads a couple of sentences from a card, but when others read this card, it's gbboldoegok. This could be used as an illustration of either the remarkable processing power of our minds (Bill's proofer), or to make a point about how attentive (or otherwise) we are, or even to suggest that the spectator is in some sort of altered state. If you went to the trouble of making it seem as if the volunteer made sense of the gbboldoegok, even as the other spectators struggled with the very same words (i.e. the volunteer and spectators appear to read the same words at the same time, but see them differently), then you have the basis of an interesting routine. I've also got quite an interesting idea for a story based around all of this, which I'll endeavour to post when I have time. Regards, Caleb Strange.
