Hi there Josh,
Could you explain what 'overlap' is to magicians who may not have heard of it. Keep up the good work, it's people like you I'm proud to look up to. Thanks, Mike J Rogers

Hello Josh:
It is great to see so many great questions and answers on this site. Although I am not a "real" magician, I have had the great pleasure of accompanying you to a number of magic conventions and lectures over the years. Through that opportunity, I have learned to appreciate MAGIC, and I have met some really wonderful and interesting people. Over the years, I have also been able to watch you perform fantastic magic, and more importantly, "perform" in real life as a fine young man! Keep up the good work! And by the way, your Father told me not to call you before 1pm today because you went to a late party last night. So in the famous words of ET, "phone home" when you get a chance. Take care, and good luck to all of you in MAGIC land. Uncle D |

For those who don’t know, the overlap gaff is a special card that I designed for use in several different effects—mostly effects with four of a kind. I dubbed the card “overlap” because the principle is that of cards overlapping. This concept certainly isn’t original with me—a complete history can be found in my opening comments of the issue it was included with (from Hofzinser to Billis to England, and everywhere in between). At any rate, I also added an extra index on the opposite corner. That is, three Jacks are shown overlapping on one end and the King of Diamonds index is situated on the opposite end. Not only does this give you some surprise “King” endings in gambling and twisting routines, but it also allows you to hid the gaff in your deck, disguised as a King (this way five Jacks won’t show in a spread). Hope that clarification helps,

I'm guessing you were perhaps inspired by the Deland gimmick?
