So I have decided to broaden my magic repertoire. I am considering buying a Thumb tip as you can do lots of magic with it. Where is the best place to buy one online? And how much are they for one that works well? Also I'm 16, is this an issue with the size?

Buying one online could be an issue. I find that a thumbtip needs to be tried on. You need to look for ones that fit right, have the right color and so forth. I like the Vernet Medium (Soft) Thumb Tip. "The one "must have" gimmick for every magician! This is the SOFT Vernet tip, made of softest plastic, and just a bit longer, for larger loads." Lots of stores carry them, but I would not buy one with out being able to try it on. That is my own personal opinion, others may disagree.
Penguin Magic carries a large assortment, as does Hank Lee's Magic Factory and MJM Magic SOme stores even carry a seven pack as seen below: Kingman |

I bought the Vernet set of seven shown above; some I like, some I don't.
I use 3 of the 7: TT Medium (soft), TT Classic and TT King Size for double loads. I agree with Kingman, though; you're really better off hitting a convention or a board and mortar store to find the best match. I got lucky with the Vernet set; they're a close match even though they could use some more rose tinting in them to match me.

I had a one size fits all metal one in the forties, but I was lucky, I had big hands and could palm a basketball when I was 12. I would get the pgk that is recommended above, see what fits and stick the rest in a drawer. You may grow into them if you are only 16. I also heard a rumor that someone used a purple thumbtip to prove that color does not matter. Of course if you stick your thumb up and say "Here is an ordinary thumb," people might get suspicious. Trying them on is the best advice given above,

If used properly the only consideration is proper fit. Color does not matter if used properly (see previous post).
I once used a hollowed out carrot just for fun and nobody saw a thing. Proper use is more important than what it looks like. Iven

You may also want to invest in a DVD or book on thump tips, for the right way to use it.

I once saw amazon.com was selling Vernet TTs on sale for a penny a piece. Now that's a steal.

A terrific DVD on thumbtip use is the Pat Page Secret Seminars on on thumbtips (Available from L&L). Cheap DVD with superb advice.

I also suggest the L&L World's Best Magic DVD on the thumbtip. If you just want a basic and very inspiring instruction, the Page DVD is wonderful. The WGM is full of out-of-the-box thinking on this gimmick.
You don't really need a color match, but getting fairly close is good. Take a properly-fitting TT of the wrong color over a poor fit with a nice color match. Most of the time, they don't have to see the gimmick. The Page DVD has a nice little bit at the end where he uses an improvised device just to show that you don't need it to be invisible to make it work. -Patrick |

With that price for shipping it sounds like Amazon is doing the stealing. I agree with the above posts. The Vernet line is one of the best. Find one that fits properly and you will never be sorry.

I recently got a Vernet TT Classic, but it isn't an ideal fit (I'm quite small). However, I've still managed to use it without people seeing. I'd much rather try some on to find a good fit, but as there's no shop anywhere near me, I'll have to wait until I'm next in place that has one
I was thinking of using tape or something to line the edge so as to make it a little more snug. Is this a viable idea?

Essentially there are three sizes for Thumb Tips: Small, Medium and Large. For 'most' adult males you are going to want Large. I sell a Japanese Latex tip that is seemless, matte finish, etc. that is essentially the same size as the Vernet regular tip.
The medium tip is again 'generally' about the size that would fit an adult male first finger. The small is really small. Small woman or a young child. That's pretty much it size wise. Even if the large tip might be a little bit 'big' you can adjust by making sure, for instance' that part of the item going in is between thumb and side of tip, etc. You can also adjust the size smaller by placing small strips of masking tape around the first 1/2 inch or so of the tip until it feels right. Real quick philosophy of the tip: Don't worry about it being seen. DON'T .... try to hide it. Act as naturally as possible. No fast wavy movements. Here's everything important: A TT works NOT because it is not seen at times, but because it is NOT perceived as being there. If YOU are worried about being caught you up your chances by many degrees. Try to forget it's there. ACT as if it is not there. Magically, actions are best hid because they have been learned past your need to be aware of them. Once they are automatic, they are automatically hidden. A lack of awareness on your part imparts invisibility that is part of what makes 'misdirection' function at the highest level. Best.

Get one and a good dvd on routeins.
I use one all the time in my shows. if you have a local magic shop. they will let you look at them to get the fit and matching color. I do prefer one that matchs my skin tone. because I like showing my hands empty. just use your pointer finger to hide the front of the tip.if you learn to wear it alot you will get use to having it on.and will forget its there. when you don't notice it your audience won't notice it either. to me its one of my most important props.and miracles can be done with it. todd |

You might also want to check out the works of Salvano and Gary Darwin, both offer plenty of advice on the TT.
All the best, Sven ^^
