Hi everyone,
Some of you already know that I started collecting Tenyo not so long ago. To build my collection I naturally started watching on Ebay, but there are mainly two users (Member Id: h***n and Member Id: m***g) who seems to make each auction go very high. They overbid each other's like crazy even after the auction is on for a couples of hours (not the best strategy to buy at a good price on auction site). Without this two gentleman, I am sure the prices would not be so high and I was wondering if anyone knows who they are? Are they member here on the Café? Because maybe we can tell them to slow down a little bit Signed: A poor guy with too many great Tenyo missing from is collection... |

The letters mean nothing but you can pretty much identify the person by their feedback number.
h**n is from Canada and m**g is from the UK. They are real bidders and not shill bidders so that at least is good. I don't know them to be Café members, but I can be wrong. Some members lurk and don't post. Hopefully when they get what they wants things will settle down. What is happening right now on the auction site is not good, and I am saying that as a seller as well as a buyer. I know from my sources that there is plenty of good Tenyo out there so just be patient and you will get what you want. Try not to get caught up in this frenzy. Just wait it out and it should get back to where you can buy a trick to open and play with/perform. AA |

A suggestion for new collectors, waiting out the storm.
Buy some of the less popular tricks right now. All Tenyos are great in their own way. You can get many good tricks for less than $25. Get those for now to play with. |

WOW , Coin of Dracula at $172 and 2 days left of bidding. Would like to know who h***n from Canada is... perhaps they would like to buy a near complete collection <g>... from a fellow Canadian.
Skyker like many here we have tried to build the majority of our collections without using ebay as the prices are defintely on the higher side. Some of the more "rare" items ebay may be the main source. Although AA has done a pretty amazing job of building a significant collection in a short period of time with private sources. John |

Thanks for the advice AA.
JM Talbot - You're probably right, but for now the majority of the prices offer in private I saw where based on the last auctions sales. Like: I sell that for $$$ because that's the price of the market since the last auction end at $$$... Anyway, like AA said, I will pace myself and be patient. Benoit |

Indeed, we can all agree the prices of some items on Ebay are (way) too much ... for example the last Mini-Morphosis sold for less then 150 USD, the first a couple of months ago for roughly 350 USD. Sit back, relax and watch (and hope) the prices drop. It wouldn't be the first time an item sold for a lot and a couple of the same items are offered in the next few weeks.
I would be surprised if the buyers knew about this forum. I mean, why not first ask for a trick on this forum filled with collectors before paying hundreds of dollars on Ebay? Why not thoroughly search for tricks at magic shops online? I mean, Alpha Tunnel sold for 214 USD (new in English old package) and one of the first links (with me the first one actually) you have in Google if you type in Alpha Tunnel is http://www.maxello.com/index.php?p=9201&q=9603&c=to-10156 ... . Unless these buyers have an enormous packaging fetish I don't understand. Of course I too rather have a nicely mint trick but 180 USD for packaging seems so much to me ... . An even better example is this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220993399503?ssP......36.l2649 - Alpha Tunnel bought for 71 USD WITHOUT packaging That's TWICE the price of Maxello and the trick was used! I suggest the new collectors that don’t know about Maxello’s site take a look. Apart from Alpha Tunnel also Cardframe is sold and it sells for more on Ebay, even without packaging. Look for other sites, ask on magic forums, phone magic shops or even better drive to them. A lot have Tenyo that they don't even know of because it is packed in old boxes in their warehouse |

No question the cheapest options are traditional retail outlets but that is becoming trickier to find for the older items... still possible. If you do not care if it is English packaging the Japanese sources are probably the cheapest method for a large number of tricks. Good Luck!

Killertweety I posted before seeing your post but we agree. Bottom line there is not always a lot of rational thought in magic collecting in general. I enjoy other magic as well and follow most of the popular magic auctions... in the magic collecting world there are many individuals with very deep pockets.

Sage advice by those who advocate waiting. I overpaid for T-158 Twister and recently found a bunch of new ones for $15. I did the same thing for Mirage T-129 and found 3 new ones at the same place this past Christmas for $24.

Tenyo. Ed http://shop.forchristmas.com/tenyo?campi......2;quote] Ah, this place is just another eBay shill page. All those Tenyos are just eBay auction pages. I hate these types of sites. If I want to know what's on eBay, I'll just log onto eBay. |

You'll see "Amazon", etc.. too. It is, yes, largely a waste of time. But. it does show what's out there for sale on the web.

M***g is called "gazhome1983" on eBay, from United Kingdom, and indeed he has a lot of money having regard to its latest acquisitions ... That's all I can say!

It only takes two people bidding on the same item to drive the prices way up.
There was a period when antique magic sets were going for very high prices ... then one of the major buyers died, another lost his job, and I sold my collection. With the three of us out of the picture, the prices for sets dropped dramatically. Antique magic posters have suffered and enormous drop in value in the last 10 years. This is all cyclical and the price for Tenyo items will drop at certain points, then go up again, then drop, then go up. The one thing that will kill the value of Tenyo items once and for all is when the company stops making magic tricks every year. When there are no new things to collect, people give up. I know this because I used to have a very large collection of James Bond film posters and it was widely believed that if they stopped making Bond films (and the possibility of this has been a genuine one at several points in time) the value of everyone's poster collection would drop through the floor. |

As Richard mentions, it only takes two bidders who want an item for an auction price to go up.
I am not sure I agree however, that if Tenyo stops making magic items, the value of previous Tenyo will drop. They could just as well increase because of their rarity. Kind of hard to predict as it could go either way. |
