I certainly do not think you should try to be Doc. Not for any reason. For that matter Doc should not try to be you. I think you nail it with wanting to be yourself.
I just think some are reacting to the sort of dismissive way in which you spoke of him is all.

Bartending seems like a romantic job. In many ways, it is. It's also hard work. You basically play catch up all shift. Stocking, cleaning, etc. I did it in college and it was fun, but I was 22. Looking back, I can't imagine ever having the time to do magic while working. Maybe on a Monday night when it was slow in the restaurant, I could do it.

Oh bartending is a tough job to do well. That was the point of my first post.
Keeping things clean, people happy, ice full, coolers full, and fruit cut, and on and on and THEN getting to magic! Doc was (I am not sure maybe he can clarify but probably still is.) an actual bartender and a *** good one! The point is to sell drinks, not do tricks. If a customer is waiting too long for a beer, well the owner isn't going to be happy. When I tended bar it took quite a bit to figure out that the magic was indeed secondary. Often tricks had to be stopped right in the middle! It changes how you approach what it is you do. Far easier to do tricks in a bar, even behind it, without the responsability of tending the bar.

My recommendation (as a fulltime bartender and paid magician) would be to work the high tops around the bar and if there is a spot near the back or service station as a recommending point to start (especially if no servers on). You do not want to even try to mix in with the main area of the bar. At the bar, if it is not a magic night (with 30mins set every hour for 5 hours), then I only do magic when everyone has been served and if I have help (someone able to cover customers be it a barback or other bartender) and I do it at the ends of the bar, away from the action. 1. If you drive by and the bar is "slow" this makes it look busy thru the door or window b/c of crowd. 2. you are not in the way of the others working. 3. I still keep an eye and ear out to help those waiting at the bar in my area.
Big point: If you are behind the bar, working there or not, people will expect you to help them. It is a fact. One good thing if you can get into working with the bartenders is you can use code (think something like Invisible Deck) and you can involve them in giving a prediction. I know what you mean by the Doc Eason's stuff not "working for your demographic" but I think you are way off. I use his stuff religiously. Some his way (patter/presentation) but with my personality and "knacks" thrown in and other stuff in my own way. The nuts and bolts and card on ceiling are two of my nightly staples, bartending or magic, doesn't matter. Just to watch him work the bar, get drinks, do magic has been an inspiration along with other recommendations like JC Wagner, Scotty York, Bob Sheets and others out there. You mentioned character and development and the one thing that I can assure you is that this is probably harder than the tricks you are performing. I try my hardest to have my character be just an extension of my outgoing personality. Is it slightly over the top, yes but so am I. Eric Jones is SO smooth but if you have ever met him (I have) this is who he is. This is why it is so effective for him. Good luck. Keep us posted and ask away. Cheers, Justin

Thanks guys
Ok, so when I go in to do my pitch, there are a few things I haven't decided on yet. 1. Do I plan do magic for the GM/whatever when I'm making the pitch, or do I just say "I'll come back Tuesday night and perform for free"? Obviously if he says "Show me something" I'm not going to be like "no." lol, but should my intentions be to go in there and give him a preview? 2. Do I give my preferred setup (like behind the bar, at my own table, whatever) in the pitch, or do I just leave it entirely up to them? Thanks for your advice |

How many times have you been to this bar? Are you extremely familiar with the setup/workings/etc... or is this a first time pitch/first time in the place? What is your pitch? Are you pitching to do magic in the entire place and mentioning behind the bar or just behind the bar only? I think that this is important for the sale. If someone came into my place and pitched me on magic for guest in the place and the first night they are there and behind the bar, I would not be happy. I wouldn't make it a surprise if this is what you've got your mind set on. Best of luck.
Justin

Strat.. haven't we communicated in the past? Seems like you and I have traded emails on this subject... or here on the café or somewhere.. remind me.
Drunk 17 year olds..really ? You're under arrest..! Serving minors will get the place closed down! Not a good career move. Just sayin'....

Wow, hey Doc! No, I've never had the fortune of speaking to you before.
Thanks for the advice, I'll check that stuff out now Btw, as I'm sure you know, I definitely meant no offense and I hope I didn't come across as disrespectful earlier And as far as the 17 year olds go, they drink at home and THEN come to the bar, nobody serves them lol Thanks again everyone for the advice, I'll be doing all my scouting and research this week, then my pitch to the bars the following week, wish me luck |

It is unclear from your posts exactly how much actual performing you have done. It's a big bite to think that you can jump behind a bar, sling a few beers and kill em with the newest and greatest coin creation or dvd of the week..
My colleague and fellow Doctor ... Doc Dixon has a rule of thumb for a lot of his material. "yah but can you do it for drunk people?" A good rule of thumb... Lotta guys stuff holds up under that condition... Heba Haba Al comes to mind, Jim Ryan, Mullica, Schulein, Everhart, Platt, Paul, Kryzk, but most of their stuff is, as you say, out of date, too. ;<) Get yourself out there and see what works and what doesn’t...the rules are different in a bar. you'll figure that out real quick. Your audience will let you know, loud and clear.. Since you seem to be watching dvds .. see if you can get ahold of the Del Ray video from his book. Rather than the latest 'flavor of the week' dvd .. you might think about a thorough study of his material. In the long run, it might well be time better spent. At least that's what I would do. The way he connects to an audience is nothing short of astounding. Don't hold out for big dollars.. to any bar owner/manager, you are unproven as a magician and a bartender. You might see if you can just work for free beer or food.. I assure you that you will learn a tremendous amount in a short period of time. and maybe some of the out of date stuff will seem more relevant. Hard to tell. Good luck young Jedi..

If he did his set there...it would surprise you as it would probably kill. Also, working behind the bar would probably require both skill sets, especially to start out. If you don't want to put in the work for a summer gig, then find something else. Also, you are going to have a hard time finding drunk 17 year olds in any bar you want to work in if they wish to keep their liquor license. I know of no states that allow alcohol to be served to 17 year olds. Bob Phillips |
