Thanks, Doc. Lengthy, yeah... Ha! I often end up saying a lot more than is needed to make a point. But, since I played a big fish in a small pond for many years, I thought I had a little experience to offer.

Just an update here, I decided after reading through the posts that I should hold off and learn more/get better perspective on magic before pursuing a job in it.
I felt like I was ready, so I went out and did some work, and now I have a meeting with an owner! I'm meeting with him on Monday to do a 10-15 minute set! Now I come to you guys once again for knowledge. I'm trying to construct my set, and I'm having trouble deciding between a really well-flowing focused set, and a set with lots of variety to show all the different types of magic I can do. The former will always flow much better and generally be much more enjoyable for the spec, but maybe for an interview situation like this the latter would be better, where he can see lots of different types of things. Any thoughts? (On that particular question or anything else related to the interview) Thanks! PS: Thanks for all the advice leading up to this point, it's been very helpful! |

I am not a professional, but I would lean toward doing your smoother, well-flowing set. Not sure what's in it, but I doubt the owner is primarily concerned with variety at this first meeting. You just want to do some of the best magic you can do to get the job and then worry about variety for your specs later.

You seriously want to work professionally in a bar - and want to know the BEST bar tricks?
A book - that I can sum up in just five words. 'THE MAGIC OF MATT SCHULIEN'. Readily available via Magic Inc. in Chicago and, to my mind, the greatest book of bar magic material EVER written.

My plan is to go in, do a 10-15 minute close-up set for him at the bar, then discuss all possible options with him afterwards. I'll mention all the possible options (all walk-around, walk-around with a "show" at the bar every half hour or so, no walk around and just bar magic, etc), and see what he's most interested in. Though it's a fairly small place where the bar is the main focus, because it's one of those "house of beers" places with like 50 different beers on tap, so I doubt I'd do much walk around. But if that's what he's interested in I'd be happy to do it. |

Ugh I'd love to do this, but he said the best time for him to meet was the half-hour before the bar opened. I'd really love to have him watch me perform for random customers, so I think I'll just go in like he says, and at the end suggest that I'd be more than happy to stick around until the bar opened and perform for his customers. I'm not really sure what else to do on that front |

Just got back! It went pretty much perfectly. It was the GM and his
girlfriend, which ended up being really great because I could do magic for the gf while I talked business with the GM (Though they both seemed really impressed by the magic!) I started off by "printing" my contact info onto a card by using a duplicate card and a DL. Then I did "Chicago Opener" and had the gf find the GM's card then vice versa. Moved on to Dr Daley's Last Card Trick to show them a "short, simple, but still very powerful" trick, that the gf said was her favorite trick. By then I was feeling kind of cocky so I did the coin-through-glass, but of course it didn't work perfectly lol. First time it just kind of flopped out, but I covered well by acting like it was part of the trick, saying "The first time it almost makes it all the way through", then doing it again and it worked perfectly the second time. Then did a coins-across from my hands to the gf hands, both of them were floored by that lol. They seemed to really like the coin magic and asked for more, so I did a standard matrix, and by then they were sold. We only talked business for a couple of minutes because the GM by that point was already planning out "Magic Mondays", he said he just has to talk to the owner to get it okayed PS: Thanks for all the advice guys I may have come off poorly at points in this thread, but I was always absorbing all of the information shared with me |

I figured the second line was a joke lol, but many magicians DO work for tips, so I was just adding more info that I hadn't mentioned before.

Seriously though - glad that it went okay; and it's particularly interesting to note that the coins appeared to go over so well. Yeah, I personally love coin magic more than any other style, so their excitement might have just been a natural response to me enjoying myself more too. But either way they really liked it |

CONGRATULATIONS on the gig. If I may ask, what was the outcome as far as performing area?? Does the GM want you performing behind the bar or does he want you strolling through the establishment like a regular strolling gig? Are you learning to bartend while you are performing or helping out if the bartenders get busy? Another key point, try to get whomever is working behind the bar (regardless of if you are back there or not) eventually as a confidant and "assistant" on some of your tricks.
Great job. Justin

Thanks Justin! We haven't entirely worked out all of those details yet, I'll be starting just kind of "floating", to see what they like best. I'll probably start out with my own place down at the end of the bar and let people come to me, then later in the night switch to "walk-around" type magic, and the GM will be there and tell me which he prefers at the end of the night.
In terms of "helping" the bartenders, both the owner and GM were pretty opposed to that idea. They said the bartenders all are very good and don't need help, and they just want me there as an entertainer. Which is great for me, because I've never tended bar before haha. And I definitely intend on befriending the bartenders to help me out. People generally tend to enjoy "being in on" the magic, so I'm sure it won't be too hard Thanks for all of your advice from earlier! And thanks for the congratulations |
