Our special GUEST OF HONOR this month was born and raised in the wind-swept plains of Kansas, where he discovered at an early age, via an old fashioned media called “television” the wonder of magic after seeing Doug Henning perform on one of his TV specials. Doug was already frequenting the local magic shop in downtown Topeka (actually a very large brick & mortar shop) and eventually bought a couple of doves to include in his burgeoning magic act. At the age of 9 he started doing shows and quickly became known as the “loud kid” with the deck of cards. He actively stayed involved in magic until around 16 years old, when he turned his focus on graduating and moving on to college. Once completed, he and his wife moved to Los Angeles for his first “real job” but the ever elusive call of the magic siren called and he squeeked out an invitation to the Magic Castle.
This visit re-sparked his interest and he started practicing, in particular, coin magic, which seemed to have gone through a revolution since he was a kid (ala David Roth). He would have been happy just performing for friends and family, until a chance visit into a local bar, where world-champion magician Johnny Ace Palmer was doing his weekly gig. Doug fancied himself a “veteran magician” but what he witnessed that evening destroyed any previous notion of what a magician could do. He was blown away by Johnny’s magic – literally stunned. Eventually Doug would request lessons from Johnny, who only has taken two students – Doug, and another one of Doug’s magician friends, John George. Doug would eventually put a competition act together and would win the 1998 SAM Close-up Championships in New Orleans. He also has become a frequent performer at the Magic Castle and has teamed with John George to form a show called The Magical Misfits. As a result, Doug has been able to cross-over into many different genres of magic – stage magic, stand-up and traditional close-up. Doug Brewer currently performs a one-hour, one-man show at the Red Spade Theater in Old Town San Diego. He also performs strolling and bar magic at a beach bar in Ocean Beach, California, where he’s been for over 5 years. Doug feels magic has been very, very good to him. So, feel free to ask him about any types of performance genre, the creative process, or any technical questions that you may have. Remember, he’s here to give help.
