Hello Brother Doug.
I wish to tell you how proud I am to have you not only represent yourself and magic, but our wonderful little community here in the Holy City of San Diego. You rock buddy! Devious http://www.buskingcalifornia.blogspot.com |

Thanks, guys!
I work at a small (but very cool) bar/bistro in Ocean Beach called the O'Bistro (on Voltaire Street, about a block from the beach). Winters are kind of slow there but in the summer we completely rock out with tourists. The locals are very eclectic and nice people. I've worked there over 5 years now and it's like family there. |

Doug, I've really enjoyed seeing you on the NYCMS DVDs and your own DVDs. You have a great easy-going style and you're a good teacher. Seeing you in person would be a great excuse to visit San Diego.

What a pleasant surprise! Welcome Doug! I'll be watching/reading closely. This is one of the reasons that the Magic Café is tops.

Doug,
Welcome aboard. There are 2 things that I would like you to address, if you so choose. They are the top change and the side steal. Anything regarding references to sources of information, best effects to use on, your philosophy of presentation, practice scenarios, etc. Anything you have to say would be appreciated. I find the side steal to be incredibly difficult but I keep practicing without actually using. With the top change I have a hard time believing that I get away with it and I have a tendency to choke. Again - your thoughts would be appreciated. |

Jgazmen - thanks for the questions. I don't use the Side Steal, but I worked on Barry Price's automatic side steal for a long time and just decided not to incorporate the move at all. I know that Paul Cummins' is an expert at it but I'm not sure if he has any published work. John Carney has a DVD out called "On Palming" which includes the side steal, and he is excellent at it!
The Top Change, however, is something I use ALL the time. Not to push product, but I have a routine within my card notes (High Impact Card Magic) that is a designed specifically for practicing the Top Change (this routine is called Jokers Are Wild). Vernon had a routine for practicing it also, where the card to be changed is set on top of the card box, which is resting on edge. R Paul Wilson has a variation on this trick in "5 From Scotland" put out by Kaufman that is actually a better "routine" than Vernon's and a strong effect. You might want to look at these also. The Top Change is something, as a newbie, you just can't believe you can get away with. It is one of those tricks that is hard to practice and must have at least a tiny bit of misdirection to work (though I have seen Paul Gertner, who also teaches his version either in notes or book, do it under fire). The mechanics are simple, but it takes some guts to get secure in its use. Once you do, you'll use it a lot, because it's such an effective sleight for a lot of routines. One place I use it is for Chad Long's "Now Look Here" routine (my handling, which I'll gladly teach to anyone, is a little different than the published versions, and ends with the big ending in your hands). The Top Change can also be used to set up double lifts and, Rafael Benatar uses it for a face-out instant color change - so many uses. Let me know how you are getting along with this after you've looked up these sources. |

Hey Doug:
Great to have you here... Really enjoying your posts. Are you still working the shell game? Andrew |

Thanks! I love the shell game, and yes, I still do it. One of my favorites at the bar.
