After reading one of Josh's articles in MAGIC, I went out and had some custom cards made. It turned out to be a great decision! Thanks Joshua for inspiring me!
I think this would be a great subject to elaborate on, seeing that it has become such a great promotional giveaway for me, as I sure it has been for many other magicians! Does anyone currently have custom playing cards? Or is anyone looking to have custom cards made, but doesn't know how to go about doing it? I hope that Josh is willing to share some more comments on this! Dave

I've used custom playing cards for years with good results. People save the cards. Use them in a trick where someone must sign the card. When the trick is over, give it to them for a souvenier.
One issue: size. I always use bridge size because they are only slightly larger than a regular business card. Some people are going to try to put a custom card into their business card holder, and a Poker size won't fit. I know that most card guys cringe at the thought of using bridge size. But it works for me, they fit my hands. They also make great premium give-aways. Give a whole, new deck to a customer after a show. They'll remember you every time they use it. That's my humble opinion...

Custom-printed playing cards was the right move for me. It goes against everything the older magicians told me. “Never ever use anything except for Bicycle cards, because that is the only brand people use.” Here at Ohio State University, I see a lot of late night poker games and card playing. I see a lot more nudie decks than I do Bicycles. The fact is, Bicycle is clearly not the only brand in use.
Further, having my own playing cards gives me instant credibility in situations where I don’t have the luxury of an introduction being recognized. A lot of people know a couple card tricks, so in a social setting, it is sometimes difficult to get credibility. When people see me remove my custom printed cards from a monogrammed velvet box, I have that immediate credibility (…if they only knew). Of course, it goes without saying that you have to have “the goods” to back it up. After all, bad magicians can and do get cards custom-printed. Also understand that there are different levels. Personally, I can’t stand bridge-sized cards, but some people like this size and it is certainly more affordable. I got all the bells and whistles with my deck: full color back design, velvet box, my name in silver on the box, etc. The first thing I did when I got my playing cards in the mail was send a few decks to Gary Plants—I had him make up the overlap gaffs with my back design…for my own use of course. When I originally wrote about custom-printed cards in my column, it caused a huge stir. Lots of disagreement—which is fine—and lots of people who were surprised that someone was publicly advocating the use of personalized playing cards. I have received dozens of decks in the mail from people who took my advice and got cards printed. I have yet to hear a negative comment from any of those people. I am using a move that Joshua showed us at his lecture that has received awesome results! I can't remember the name of the move, but I'll give a quick example.
From a deck of blue bicycle cards, I fan them toward myself and have someone touch the back of one. This card gets pushed up out of the deck. As the card gets pulled from the fan (before they see the face of the card) it gets switched for my custom playing card with my picture on the back. (What's this move called Josh?) Anyway, the card ends up being signed, and placed back into the deck. This whole time they think it's a blue back bicycle card, when it's really my forced custom card. Anyway, the end result is so powerful, when after an ambitious card routine, their signed card ends up being my custom cards. The reaction alone is worth the cost of custom cards. It's been a great piece for me here in Washington, and gives them a reason to keep the card. I'm sure Joshua has done a trick like this, maybe it can be expanded upon?

Silly question from overseas...
Where does one go about getting "custom"playing cards, and what sort of price are you looking at?? |

The move Dave is referring to is my Discreet Displacement, which is something I always teach at lectures. Your use for the move is simple and great, and I'm sure you do get killer reactions with it.
It is similar to my handling of Frank Everhardt's "Red Hot Mama" with the move, which is in my book and also in Genii Magazine from a few years ago. Thanks, Joshua Jay |

Joshua,
Again, I'm not really a card guy, but the simplicity of your Discreet Displacement has really helped me a great deal. By the way, thanks for the great lecture in Phoenix. I have to drive 100 miles to attend those meetings and you made it WAY worth my while to go. |

What should you look for when coming up with a back design on your cards?
Thanks for your time Joshua! Bill

I'm also interested in the possibility of Custom Cards! Where are some sources for these and what is the price range?
Thanks, Gambit242 |
