I thought it would be easy to have a thread with suggestions for effects that are Tenyo-like for us. The idea is from another thread but I believe it's easy to have everything nicely ordered in one single thread.
It has been asked in other threads what manufacturers of micro-magic we love, here we can have a nice list of the effects themeselves we like the most. A lot of people focus mainly on Tenyo (and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that ) but there are sooooo many beautifull effects that are like Tenyo and are often (much!) better, more beautifull and, with today's prices being payed for rarer Tenyo's, less expensive. The name of this section on Themagiccafe is called 'Room Of Wonders' afterall. The Trick has to be Tenyo-like, by which I mean: - easy to do - preferably mechanical (or electronic) gimmick-operated like most Tenyo's - and if possible inspectable after (or sometimes even before) the Trick (this is unfortunately not always the case as with a lot of Tenyo's). Needless to say you have to like the trick a lot and therefore OWN it so you are able to have an honest opinion. Perhaps it is also usefull to just post links to threads on the Café where products like these are being discussed. There are so many posts on this site in other sections that are/get easily lost, so here we can bring them back to life. I suggest we at least post a link to a picture/movie and/or discription of the effect (or discribe it ourselves) and if possible a link to where one can buy it if it is still available of course. I have created a kind of template we can use, but feel free to adjust to your own liking of course! Trick: Effect: Picture: Type of magic: parlor/close-up // mentalism, penetration, transposition, ... Requirements/difficulty: easy to use/palming or other sleights required, ¡K Where to buy: link if available Inspectable before/after: yes/no/more or less Personal rating: x/10 and perhaps we can say why I have taken the liberty to mention Tricks that have been mentioned in the other thread by other members, I hope no one minds ¡K . Let me begin with stating the obvious: a lot of wonderfull effects can be viewed on Cormatches/Magic Patagonia's channel on Youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/user/cormatches ). A great place to start if you ask me. Most effects are hard to find though but we are all used to search for Tenyo Tricks and therefore know what it means to ¡¥put some effort¡¦ in finding tricks Here are already some beautifull effects I like, a lot more to come. I have taken the liberty to mention a few tricks that have been mentioned in the other thread by other members, I hope no one minds ¡K . Trick: Multi-Dimensional by Promystic Effect - pictures: Ok ... you'll have to save for this one, but once you get it you will probably don¡¦t use a trick like Diabolicus or Color Vision (Die Vision) again ... See here for thread: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 - a lot of reading to do Picture: http://www.promystic.com/multi-dimensional.html Type of magic: parlor/close-up // mentalism Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: http://www.promystic.com/multi-dimensional.html Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 9,5/10 (deducted 0,5 because it is really expensive, almost 500 USD for everything you need) Trick: Mikame Mystery Chain Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le35wbEAlBY Type of magic: close-up // restoration of a broken chain Requirements/difficulty: palming, but the gimmick helps, not very hard Where to buy: lot's of sites, do a search on Google Inspectable before/after: after Personal rating: 8/10 // -2 because I don't like palming Trick: Mikame Final Penetration Effect/picture: penetration of a block through a wooden plate - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mlGRZLpPgs Type of magic: parlor // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V fairly easy Where to buy: lot's of sites, do a search on Google Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because you have to 'do' something and you can screw up if not done properly Trick: Excalibur Block And Sword Effect/picture: A sword penetrates a ring - more info here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......art=0#19 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V fairly easy Where to buy: http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/full/close-u......4443.htm - other sites too Inspectable before/after: after if you ditch the gimmick Personal rating: 8/10 - deduct 2 points because it will need a litle bit of practice, not much though. Not inspectable before. You have to ditch something if you want it to be examinable after, but everything is provided to do this. „³ Note: this trick does absolutely NOT work the same as Enchanted Ring-effects! Trick: Enchanted Ring by Dave Powell (or other manufacturers like Anverdi, Paul Diamond, Tannen, German version, ¡K but they have been discontinued) Effect/picture: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......m=109&23 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/?nd=full&key=9962, other sites too Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because there's something that could have been made better (which makes a sound ...) Trick: Magiro Wand And Block Mystery Effect/picture: see http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......=258&111 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // penetration of blocks Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: http://www.cannon-secrets.de/menu.html Inspectable before/after: more or less ... if you hand out everything to different spectators there is no problem Personal rating: 9,5/10 - deduct 0,5 points because you have to be carefull letting it examine Trick: Magiro Coin And Bolt Effect/picture: see http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......=258&111 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // penetration of signed coin Requirements/difficulty: palming if you want it to be inspectable after the trick ¡V easy overall Where to buy: http://www.cannon-secrets.de/menu.html Inspectable before/after: after if you ditch the gimmick, before if you do another switch Personal rating: 9,5/10 - deduct 0,5 points because not inspectable before the trick and palming (not necessary) Trick: Cube Off by Campbell Effect/picture: penetration of a wooden block - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg8AdLbDhTE Type of magic: parlor/stand up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: lot's of sites Inspectable before/after: no Personal rating: 8/10 - not inspectable Trick: Spirit In The Coffin by Magic Works Effect: The spectator chooses a sign - the electronic coffin reveales it. Impossible to figure out by the spectator. Let the spectator try, it won't work. Picture: http://www.martinka.com/martinka/auction......id=11554 Type of magic: parlor/close-up (electronic) // mentalism Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: not available, discontinued. They sometimes pop up on Ebay. Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 8/10 - deducted 2 because the electronics can brake if you're not carefull. If you buy one make sure the seller tests the apparatus and ask to ship it well pakced. Trick: Tongue Tied by Magic Works Effect/picture: see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NheHTwP_k80 Type of magic: close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: not available, discontinued. They sometimes pop up on Ebay. Inspectable before/after: no Personal rating: 7/10 - -3 because not inspectable and looks cheap Trick: Industrial Revelation by Jamie D. Grant Effect/picture: penetration of a cardbox - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYOq0XWR25M - http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=218 Type of magic: close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: http://magicfriday.blogspot.com/2001/07/......ion.html Inspectable before/after: after, before not necessary Personal rating: 9,5/10 - deduct 0,5 because needs some 'wair in' time and not inspectable before ..., not really an issue though! Trick: Hydro Die by Magiro and other manufacturers Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp35FW6L0......ure=plcp Type of magic: parlor/close-up // dissapearance of a die Requirements/difficulty: more or less palming for ditching the gimmick ¡V easy Where to buy: not available, discontinued Inspectable before/after: more or less before, afterwards yes after some switcheroo Personal rating: 9/10 - deduct 1 point because not 100% inspectable before Trick: Energized Coin by Marvin's Magic Effect/picture: see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDsCvdokjo0 - http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=52 Type of magic: close-up // penetration of a coin Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: not easy available - search on Amazone.co.uk, the seller doesn't ship outside the U.K. though. The older version is discontinued, the newer version is with a poker chip (I¡¦d like to have the newer version, so if soemoen has one for sale or trade or can get one I would appreciate it very much) Inspectable before/after: more or less Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because not 100% inspectable before Trick: Pompom Stick/Pole by Mikame Effect/picture: classic Pompom stick, close-up version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFjXTSWf8AE Type of magic: parlor/close-up // pompom-stick Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: a lot of sites Inspectable before/after: not really Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because if the *** aren't ligned up correctly the pompoms don't go up and down fluently Trick: Pegged Card Mystery by Tricks Co. Japan Effect/picture: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRICKS-CO-JAPA......56515147 Type of magic: close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: see link above, also other sites sometimes Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 8/10 - -2 because a litle bit of akward handling Trick: Squeeze Away Block - some manufacturers like Difatta Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkTqbxKa2......pp_video Type of magic: parlor // penetration Requirements/difficulty: ditch something ¡V easy Where to buy: don't know - do a search, Difatta still makes it Inspectable before/after: no Personal rating: 7/10 - you have to ditch something and if you're not carefull spectators will notice this (angle problem alert!). Not inspectable. Trick: El Torero Decapitation Illusion Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzJ8jSEt5ec - http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/el......ge-magic Type of magic: close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: not available ¡V sometimes Ebay Inspectable before/after: more or less Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because not really inspectable in my opinion, also costs a lot for what you get thesedays Trick: Color Changing (Poker)Chips - also know by other names like 'Black And White Surprise' Effect/picture: You all know it probably, and most likely have it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrECfeQSn9I Type of magic: close-up // transposition Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy, just be carefull Where to buy: Lot's of dealers - don't by the cheapest version though. Trick: Impossible Penetration Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB57UXeyz44 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V easy Where to buy: lot's of sites, but take in mind cheap = often no good quality Inspectable before/after: No, although most people don't figure it out if they inspect it for a very short while Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because not 'really' inspectable Trick: Free Will trick Effect/picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nw4PnOSVJY Type of magic: parlor/close-up // mentalism Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: a lot of sites Inspectable before/after: yes Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because not possible to do two times for the same spectators, but then again one should never do that ... . Trick: Travelring by tricks Co. Japan/Viking Effect/picture: http://www.vikingmagic.com/?nd=full&key=1957 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // transposition/penetration Requirements/difficulty: none ¡V super easy Where to buy: discontinued, although I have a spare that I'm willing to sell or trade Inspectable before/after: yes, but not for a very long period Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because of one litle bit 'strange' move, but when incorporated into a routine no one will notice ... . Trick: ESP Chipsational by Viking (also made by Alan Warner in the past) Effect/picture: http://www.stevensmagic.com/index.php?ma......d=113139 Type of magic: parlor/close-up // mentalism ¡V easy Requirements/difficulty: one teeny-weeny thing, but not difficult at all (I can¡¦t tell without exposing part of the trick) Where to buy: lot¡¦s of sites Inspectable before/after: more or less ... Personal rating: 9/10 - -1 because I would liked it to be a bit smaller AND SO MUCH MORE ... but that's enough for now I hope to see a lot of posts here David |

List, List, List. Thanks for the list This is great.
Would it be appropriate to list those Tricks you thought were Tenyo like but Hated?? Killer, this is your post, so what do you think. Or should we do it another day in another post? |

Wow this was a great idea.
Thanks for the work you put in to repost all this previous posts on Tenyo like tricks in one place. The template idea is good if people adhere to it, makes it very east to check each effect quickly. Wish I'd thought of it! Think this will be a popular thread.

I just thought it would be helpfull - so post anything you like Perhaps someone can start another thread with 'bad' tricks, or post it here and give it a very low rating ... up to you! Joe, about Blockboster - I have been thinking in buying it, but it had some bad reviews here on Thecafe, the new version not working smooth (see here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 and http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=238158&forum=109). Also, it seems such a very short routine, but then again some of the tricks I like are short too! Blockbuster is not inspectable before nor after I believe (exept for the ring) - and you have to reset it which is not very easy and slow (at least that's what I've read). Perhaps the ring of Blockbuster can first be used for Enchanted Ring or Excalibur Block and Sword and you have a longer routine? |

Yes, setup is a bit of trouble. And, if it gets bumped before performance, it may need some adjustment before using.

Thanks Felix! Looking forward to see those gems
Here's a GREAT new one I recently acquired ... . Trick: Psycho II by Larry Becker Effect/picture: Here's a demo by Paul Daniels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkrdiSlUFnk (the trick doesn't need the Crystal Ball, it's just a nice way to reveal the chose card of course - see bellow for a suggestion to replace the crystal ball) Type of magic: stage, parlor or close-up / mentalism Requirements/difficulty: special manilla envelopes (the regular brown 'Kraft' ones won't work) and colored ESP-cards (see demo video). The requirements in Mr. Becker’s book are written as follows: “You’ll need three nesting manila envelopes and 5 colored E.S.P. design cards. Everything is totally unprepared. However, once you understand the principle involved, you will have to search around your local stationery supply stores to find the proper, light cream colored manila envelopes that work best.” - super easy to do! Where to buy: discribed in the book Stunners Plus! by Larry Becker (page 190) - http://www.shopwiki.com/l/Stunners-Plus-by-Larry-Becker - try to buy a used one, the book is expensive (but it is VERY good with FANTASTIC effects that are often easy to do). Also comes in package with everything you need I recently found out (see bellow). Inspectable before/after: yes, before and after (but not for hours ...) Personal rating: I bought myself a used copy of Stunners Plus a year or two ago and always wanted to perform the effect but didn't find the manilla envelopes that work. A week or two ago I stumbled upon the same effect 'in package' with envelopes and ESP-cards specially for the effect. It's a GEM, really. Can be incorporated in other routines like with Eye Of The Idol (replace gems with ESP symbols/cards). Here’s a suggestion: perform like Paul Daniels does, let the spectator write his chosen symbol (no force!) on a litle piece of paper that you put into the 'special mind reading jewel case that transmits it's thoughts to the mysterious Idol' (wow, what a name )) of Eye Of The Idol and let the statue do it's work (in stead of the crystal ball Paul Daniels uses, I believe Eye Of The Idle is even more 'stunning'). Can also be used with the trick Hand Of Cleopatra. You have a WINNER here that will leave your audiences baffled. 9,5/10 - decuted 0,5 points because it seems hard to find the proper manilla envelopes, perhaps in the USA or Canada they can easily be found. Note: The idea of combining Eye Of The Idol with this kind of a trick is based on a personnal message I got from Simon/simcoscor about a routine combining Eye Of The Idol with Magic Wagon’s The Scarab or The Golden Sphinx, while not 100% the same method/effect a lot of credit goes to him! |

Yes David this is a great Thread and you have started it off nicely. I will certainly add a few items in your format when I have time. Will be great if people stick to your format so we can continue to build the "master list" Am off to the Canadian Association of Magicians Convention this weekend... perhaps I will find a few more treasures... like I really need them!

No gadgets, no plastic, no special cards or envelopes... It's a great effect, but it doesn't seem as if Psycho II fits in with the rest of "our" stuff.

Don't believe everything you read It is gimmicked, but in a VERY clever way (and no, the cards aren't marked). It's self working, no sleights, absolutely free choice by the spectator. Can be inspected before and after - the magician even playes the role as performer in the first part of the routine where the magician explains everything - everything is (seems ) extremely fair.
It' isn't a plactic gimicky apparatus, that's true. |

A fine item (although mentioned a few times before by me and Brett) to include here was Viking's Nostradamus Chest.
An extremely clever mechanical device without mechanics! Invented and marketed by Jos Denis. it's a very strong effect that will astound even knowlegable magicians! Potty the pirate has a video performance where he uses it in his kid's show! Highly recommended!!

Aha invented by my fellow compatriot Jos Denys - I'm going back to his store in a few weeks probably. I wonder if he still has one or more for sale - it's pretty expensive though, but the effect seems impossible and easy, just the way we like it If anyone else is interested in buying it pm me and I will ask him about it.

I just got this Tricks Co. piece for just USD 11.- .......I'm not sure if it is a great trick or not......but I really liked the concept of a penetration effect where you can actually see the penetration occur... TRICK: Mystery Door Penetration by Tricks Co. Ltd. Japan Effect/picture: http://youtu.be/E6Z-yi0pXug Type of magic: Penetration Requirements/difficulty: Medium Where to buy: discontinued, not sure if it's one or the hard to find from Tricks Co........Killertweety what do you think? Inspectable before/after: no Personal rating: 7/10 because it's not easy to make it work smoothly....in fact for the video I dismounted all the unit......made some adjustments and put all the pieces together again... |
