At the NY Ren Faire we used to call cell phones "Demon Boxes" as they had to be to produce sound from the air and produce star like lights

I think they are the most asocial invention human kind has produced. People now are busy talking on their phones in public places, or even when I'm on a walk with them, when they could be talking to a human being they haven't met yet (a stranger is friend you haven't met yet.)
I have a cellphone but use it for what it was invented: To call in case of emergency, not to make what I call pleasure calls: how are you, what are you doing, what are you wearing,... People are distancing themselves from eachother. |

Cirrus, I'm all for creating magical plays. It's what I have been doing for years through Supernatural Chicago.
But when you say, "To me it is even weird that most mentalists think people perceive them as real," I must confess surprise. To make a magical play truly work means being fully committed to your character. You must believe, for the time that you are commanding the performance space, that your abilities are real. And if you are convincing, your audience has a good chance of feeling the same way. By the looks of some of the guest reviews on TripAdvisor.com, I've been reasonably successful in this regard— "I'm a skeptic, but he had me wondering about ghosts by the time we left." "I was a little scared being by myself afterwards...I swear I felt something watching over my shoulder...In the words of my freaked out boyfriend, "The only way I can describe what just happened, that's some DEVIL SH$%." "He brought my teenaged daughter to center stage and proceeded to read her mind. We tried to figure it out all the way home, and the only explanation is that he is in league with the spirits. We had a blast." This isn't "weird," Cirrus, it's simply a mark of effective theatre. (Consider how much of the public expects specific actors to be just like the characters they play on TV or in films.) If nobody in your audience perceives your abilities as real, well, perhaps more rehearsal is needed. Best, Neil

Necromancer, I say most mentalists, even when it is obvious that what they do is just tricks. I'm not talking about you, because if they believe, then you did do it right.
I'm love the fact that people want to believe in a good actor (believe me I had discussions about this in the workers). |

I simply love the cups and balls. I don't speak when I do it (when I do it alone). I don't like the salemen-magician (Now we do this and I put the ball here and now it vanishes, and it's under the cup and then I take the other ball,...). I just do the routine, the way it's supposed to be done.
I love my character, off course I'm going to put in all the work that is necessary. I want to play it as real as it is possible, for my character. |

Part of the genesis of bizarre magic was precisely a reaction to the reduction of conjuring to overtly illusionary comic burlesque. That's what Criss Angel said

Many mental effects leave no room for a lay person's explanation except that it must be real. Magic with a story can accomplish the same thing. Mental effects such as WA or Luna from outlaw appear very real. But so does a simple billet routine. A great resource that mixes bizarre and mentalism is R Shane's Pentalogy. One of my favorite books. I like what G'zilla said about doing what you want to do and making it entertaining. I'm still waiting for Neil Tobin to write a book. I'd snatch that up quick. Have fun with your magic Cirrus and hang around here a while. I really enjoy your posts. |
