So with many of us working on Macs now, I've decided to leave ACT and switch to FileMaker Pro. I have a tech creating a customized database at this time, and will probably be selling a blank copy of it afterward for people who have FileMaker Pro already. It's being made in FMP12, and will be compatible with iPads and iPhones.
Just wanted to put out some feelers to find out if there are any features in particular that you would like to see. Every database solution is unique, so I'm looking for creative ideas that will make this useful to the masses.

I'm curious to know how you like Filemaker Pro in general.

I've been using Filemaker Pro for about 3 years now after using MSAccess for years prior and I really like it . It is just so much more intuitive and powerful. It is cross platform also.
The Charting functions since FM11 are really cool too. But I'm kind of a database geek. Anytime I have a list of something or a group of data. I'll wirte a database. As far as the OP-- Are you making a contact/ booking management DB, just to replace ACT? I think the reason you have not gotten many responses is that most people don't know what a well designed DB can really do. Good luck with this project. |

I've been using FileMaker Pro since they started (Claris Corp.). That was about 25 years ago. It's a great database program.
There's a Filemaker magic database for magicians available. I downloaded the free trial and played around with it. A lot of thought went into its' development. Sorry I forgot its' name but you can search for it on the Magic Café. If you can't find it let me know and I'll dig it out. Ihor

Kevin, you were always so positive about ACT! how come you would change? Switching to mac maybe?
I was just looking to start using ACT! instead of Access, Base or filemaker. What are your thoughts? |

I used Act! for a couple of years and finally switched over to http://www.showbizcrm.com/ It's a very robust contact management system for entertainers (magicians, jugglers, clowns, bands, etc.) I love how it interfaces with my email account AND my website contact form and automatically follows up on leads and sends out my contract with my logo, etc.
Yeah, I was apprehensive about not having my own data sitting on my own hard drive protected by my own lock and key. However that's part of the problem. If my hard drive dies....no worries. If I'm away from my pc, I can access the data anywhere that has web access. I don't have to worry one bit about my data being backed up...it happens automatically for me. I don't have to worry about OS upgrades and compatibility issues. I've got online support, as well as scheduled phone support if I can't figure something out. I don't have to pay for upgrades when new features are available. Finally....No they didn't pay me to say all of this, and that is NOT an affiliate link that I posted above. Although I like it so well that I may sign up for that. I think you get like a 6 week trial with full access. Michael Carducci does a great job of supporting the product and is quick to listen to and implement good ideas that are submitted. And that's huge for me. I hate having a product that I rely heavily upon but am stuck figuring it out virtually on my own. Yes, it will take you a few hours to get all of your stock emails customized and have everything set-up the way that you like to run your business. BUT...it's been worth it to me. I spend a lot less time manually sending out emails. Oh...I almost forgot. Thanks to ShowBizCRM.com I also get to cancel my Constant Contact mailing list subscription since this software handles all of that for me. Ok...I'll shut-up now. |

I have always used an Access DB and don't have any complaints about it. But I notice that I do invoices on one program, email newsletters on another program -- have my sales materials on another one etc. It would be nice to have it all under one application.
Do any of these run on a PC AND an iPad? David

Hi Koenraad,
I still think that ACT is great, but I recently made the switch over the a MacBook Pro and didn't want to deal with Parallels, etc. I had somebody custom build an FMP Database with some enhanced functionality, and I must say that I love it so far. Very helpful to keep track of everything.

I had Filemaker Pro for years and liked its rock solid construction but then they came out with Bento. Bento is fantastic! Easy to use and perfect for me as a small business owner. And it's relatively inexpensive.
