Don't know where to post this... I see that Neodymium magnets have ratings N35 - N52; the higher the number the stronger magnet. They also range in size.

My question is: are there any general rules of thumb or basic calculations to determine what size / rating combination will do what I need. Examples: I want a magnet in my wallet to hold 5 cards to the outside of the wallet anchored by a steel shim, or I want a magnet in my pocket to hold something of weight outside my pocket.

I know there wont be anything exact, but just trying to get an idea of what rating / size combinations can do

The ratings will probably not have enough of a difference that you would notice anything.
The magnets are made for industrial uses, where the ratings would matter.
It really doesn't matter for magic, most of the time.
The only time it would matter would be if you need the magnet to hold something, but just barely.
So is there a formula for a chop cup, not really. It's trial and error.

But you're in luck.
You live in Dallas, and up in Plano is a great magnet shop.
This is the website...
http://www.magnet4sale.com

Their address is...
1108 Summit Avenue #8 Plano, TX 75074

Go on in there. They are really nice and used to magicians coming in there asking for magnets.

They will help you with what ever you need.
