Which side do you come down on?
http://www.usatoday.com/USCP/PNI/Front%2......ST_U.htm http://www.azjournal.com/2012/05/02/vict......unfolds/ And in any case, wouldn't it be a lot saner to declare time served and just deport the guy now? Instead of spending $$$ to house and feed him for the next few years? BTW do not miss the arrest video: http://johnkristofferlarsgard.com/video-of-the-arrest/

Depends on your your point of view. If you own a private jail you want the $$$ to house and feed prisoners don't you?

Amazing! I actually agree with tommy on this!
I read both articles and looked at the video. I didn't really see any spin- just two sides to the story. Whatever the defendant says were the reasons for his behavior, the testimony of the witnesses (of which there seemed to have been hundreds), together with the property damage and injuries sustained, seems to warrant the guilty verdict. His past and pending motor vehicle related offenses don't appear to mitigate things in his favor either. For all the support he is receiving from Norway, the fact remains that there is no video of the actual incident and his supporters obviously weren't there. |

There were some injuries to Theda Curley, true.
But what property damage are you speaking of? The car nudged a pole and / or canopy. Unless I missed something, all of the damage was to his own (rental) vehicle.

You're right. I guess I read the articles too quickly. Apparently the damage was mostly to the rental vehicle. Still damage, though, to property not his own. And the injuries to the woman seemed a bit more serious tha the USAtoday article implied.
That said, I don't know if the length of the sentence was too much because I didn't hear any of the testimony that was given at trial. But from the facts as given, it certainly seemed to me that he acted with reckless disregard for the safety of others. And, as I noted, his prior arrests (and pending trial) for similar actions certainly don't mitigate things in the defendant's favor. |

Sometimes that is entirely warranted, of course. It may have been in this case. About property damage, another article mentions that two people who assaulted the Norwegian, including the one who punched him in the face and gave him a bloody nose, were on the hook for property damage to the car (blood all over the interior) ... unless he was found guilty. Without more facts it is impossible for me to know what happened. Yes, I would have thought someone would have the entire thing on tape, given that a public event was going on there etc. Based on the incomplete information I have come across I think imprisoning him seems extreme in this case (i.e. particularly given the costs involved), rather than just kicking him out of the country. But, hey, apparently jails are one of the few growth industries in Arizona so gotta support the cause.

Wow, that's the proposed sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and 6 other convictions? You get to go back to your home country? Maybe we should give him a GameBoy to take with him.

That actually leads me to believe that the trial was pretty thorough. I imagine the state put a lot of witnesses on the stand. But the fact that the event took only 6.5 minutes is irrelevant to the length of the trial. How long, after all, does it take to shoot someone, for example? Less than a second? And how long do murder trials take? |
