Hi everybody, Bonjour,
My name is Michel, or Mike if you prefer, and I'm a young amateur magician. I'm only 50. I'm living in Bécancour, half between Montreal and Quebec city. I'm a nuclear engineer and I am actualy working in Performance Improvement. Last year I rediscovered the pleasure of praticing and doing magic with my family and friends. Then, since a year my hobby is all about magic. I really enjoy reading about the history of magic and mostly magicians. Old and new one because we can see alll the changes occuring in magic today. It's a great pleasure for me to read your topics and follow some of the discussions. Mike

Welcome TheSphinx,
I always recommend "The King of the Conjurers" by Robert Houdin for those interested in History. I don't claim to believe every word but it is a great read. Perhaps you could read it in the original French. -Mary Mowder |

Thank you Mary.
I already had a chance to read some of the great books of Robert Houdin. In French of course, but I should say that it is written in an old French style. Not always easy to read. It’s funny because it’s almost easier for me to read a book from Simon Aronson in English than an old Robert Houdin’s book. It’s always good to look in the past and see what the great magicians did to improve and push forward the magic universe. I presume that we can say without any doubt that Robert Houdin was such a major precursor of the new magic era. Maybe we can also say that Robert Houdin is one the main “grand-fathers” of mechanical principles used in many illusions. Looking at the past is good to know from where we come from (and it’s true in magic and in our lives) but we also have to look forward in the future. I’m curious to see where the magic fields are going with the new technologies available in many domains. Marco Tempest is one the brilliant magicians trying to discover new ways of doing magic today. But, at the end, I must confess that I really prefer magic tricks with sleight-of-hand. Just a deck of cards. A borrowed deck of cards !!! Mike Beaudet

Thanks Spartacus.
What a Nickname, it remembers me an old movie with Charlton Heston. A great movie... You are an elite user! Sorry for my dumb question, but what is an elite user ? Surely someone with great knowledge to help find where to Holy Grail is hidden ??? Regards, Mike

After many years of study, you too can become an elite user, but first you have to post at least 400 times in these forums with knowledge that advances the magical art. The movie you mentioned above was about my life story that occurred many hundreds of years ago. I have reincarnated into another life form and I am here to entertain and baffle all those who come into my presence. Now, go in peace and never reveal these secrets to anyone. Look at the avatar. Does this look like a man who would tell you a lie?

Spartacus,
Oh no, I'm sure you not lying. How can a man with your knowledge and maturity could lie to an amateur magician which only has 50 years of existence. 51 in 20 days !!! By the way, talking about the Holy Grail, what is your prefered trick, the one that you know, will ever has a good impact ? If it's not a card trick, what is your best card trick ever ?. Mike
