I really stopped performing in 1977 when I retired. CBS owned the rights to my show and tour in those days and after I left they hired another young magician to complete my tour.
I have written many books on magic since then and have appeared in about 20 TV specials since then but really, for the most part, I no longer perform. |

Welcome to the Café. What was the name of the show?
Et tu, Spartacus?

I think the last tour show was called Wizard, but I am not certain, it was a long time ago.

Yes, that was one of my books. That one was one of the "new wave" books because it came with a CD Rom.
Such a long time ago and technology has changed so much since that book came out. I don't even know if anyone makes CD Rom's anymore, I think it has all moved to DVD now. Thanks for asking. |

You make it seem as if the Masked Magician series were some other project they worked on.
Your book is the basis for that series, right? -Mary Mowder |

Yes, that is correct.

Well, that seems like the kind of big fat credit you'd want to put in your introduction.
Why so shy? -Mary |

Am I wrong if I say that the Masked Magician's series were controversial amongst the magician's community ? What was really the goal behind this project ? Give away magic secrets ? Make big money ? Create a new interest in magic for the laymen ? I was always wondering what exactly were the motives for a magician to be involved in this project. I'm not saying if it's good or bad I just want to understand why a magician will give all his secrets to the public in a TV show.
Sorry for my written english, I hope my question is clear enough ? Regards, Mike

Thanks for the question, Mike.
The answer is a bit more complex than you might think. The idea for the show came from a television production company who went to my publisher and licensed my book for TV production. It is the publisher who holds all the various licensing rights and they do not discuss sales with me. The production company had also licensed the television rights to several other books including Mark Wilson's epic book Complete Course in Magic. Once the television rights were sold, my publisher suggested that the company contact me, which they did. The company gave me a broad idea of what they were doing and wondered if I wanted to perform on the show. I didn't for a variety of reasons and then asked if I could suggest a magician who might. I posted on a user group of magicians this unique opportunity and many magicians replied with great interest. The production company was also looking for someone and in the end a person was chosen. I was then engaged to act as the executive director. In the end, the shows were tremendously successful. At one point, the first episode was the most watched TV special on the FOX network. Hope this answers your questions. |

Herbert,
Thanks for your reply. You're right, the show was a great succes and, of course I watched the series with great interests. In fact when I was watching the show I would have been the only one watching in order to keep the secrets for myself. I must say that you did a good show as the executive director. Were you "ex-communicated" by some magicians because you have been associated with the project ? Did it affect your relationship with the magic community ? Finally, my last question: As a very experienced magician what is your best trick or effect which was always a killer item in your shows ? Great respect to you Herbert, Mike
