I can gather a crowd and do a show but am having difficulty getting the crowd in a nice semicircle to watch the show.
Any tips on how to do this? Small witches hats perhaps? Thanks

Congratulations! If they are stopping and staying you have already overcome many obstacles. Don't forget how far you've come, that confidence is really key.
Now to your question. Here is one method. 1. Pause the show. Tell them the show is on hold for a second. 2. Define the edge you want. Use a rope, chalk, water, or just walk the line of the edge you want. 3. Provide a reason in their interest. E.g. They will be able to see better from the line. 4. Invite them forward. Don't stare at them, just let them come up while you do something else. 5. Once they are forward, un pause and resume the show. Good luck, fat hats! Kris |

Border collies.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Haha, thanks!
Thanks for the encouragement, too! Some good tips there and a gag I could use! The other thing I find difficult is that I want to keep my good material for when I have a crowd. I love doing the wand vanish and production from purse and the rings and cups and balls etc but I want to keep all that stuff till I have a bigger crowd. I can build a crowd with a TT and card magic but I want to prolong that a bit or something...

The best free resource I have found on the subject. I believe Jimmy uses a rope to create the edge, I could be wrong. I am no expert, I am just starting this journey. |

When you come on the pitch the show is started.
if your the clasicc Cellini type street magician. you can set up your table. see if it is standing stable. walk away - ajust the table - ask somebody is it standing right. or use a water level device. if you have chalk you can draw a line and invite people up to the line. do jokes like a parking space for bicycles. same canbe done with rope. if you have cups pass them out to be examend. al the time you tell the show will be starting in 2 or 1 minutes. if you have to change closthes (even it is putting a vest on) that can be used to. a friend of mine is a dancer and he simple put on his dancing shows. if I start to get an edge I do something with a child. I throw a frisbee and ask them to throw it back. this starts to involve some people. everything is show. I did the colorchanging silk and forgot to prepare one silk in a gimmick. I took the silk - stuffed it in the gimmick and made the silk disappear. 5 minutes later the red silk became green. nobody thought about the vanishing silk. set up different tricks. one in on the left side ond on the right side. claiming your space. do a warm up. do some finger excercises etc. think what you have to do to start the show. create strategies and be flexible. but always look at the audience never turn your back on them or they will do it to you. I use a whistle to make some noise. Important: don't whistle all the time. this will get annoying for the people. I use the whistle to accentuate what I do. to make the people curious. in my cowboy magic show I open my case and throw high 4 or 6 lasso's on the street. when I throw a lasso I whistle once, short and sharp. same with the other lasso's. this creates attention. next I sort out my lasso's. coil them up and lay them on the street, neatly in a row. the technique here is to creat a Bigg mess and then put everything in its place. during this proces I tell the crowd that the show will be starting soon, in 1 minute. in my Mr. Memory Show is have to assemble two drum stools. I use here the same whiste - create your space - attention as above. sometimes it take 3 minutes sometimes 20 minutes. if you understand what I say here and what I do you can go on for ever before you show a trick. the main idea is not to talk to much to soon. don't give away everything. all you want is to get attention and communication starting. don't try to be funny. no need yet. don't chase them let them come to you. like cesar millan (the dog whisperer) says:''calm and assertive". show them that you have confidence and a great show and they will come to you. the chalk line: I don't use here many lines because I am still in my silence mode. I draw the line and gesture that they come towards the line. if they don't come I draw a big arrow to the line. if they still not come I draw arrows from thier feet to the line. if they still don't want to come I pickt them up and place them on the line. this is the ultimate last try I do. be carefull with your back and who you choose to pick up. if I see sombody with a bike I draw a big square with a big P of parking in it. I gesture "stand here" if they done that I draw $5,-- always gets a laugh. when I see some children I draw 2 prints of shoes and tell them to stand on that. if I see a nice girl I draw a big hart and invite her to stand in that. after all this I start when I think I have enough people. I did the professors nightmare as an opener. I would give out the 3 ropes to be examend. ladies and gentle many THE AMAZING - THE INCREDIBLE - THE IMPOSSIBLE 3 ROPES OF MYSTERY (stretch rope to same length) MY NAMES IS ...... AND I AM GOING TO SHOW YOU SOME MAGIC - COMEDY (show 3 ropes of same lenght) and now THE AMAZING - THE INCREDIBLE - THE IMPOSSIBLE 3 ROPES OF MYSTERY (show 3 ropes of different lenghts) FROM HERE START THE SHOW. |
