I can accept the idea of street magic in jeans and a t-shirt, but I wanted to get a nice jacket to wear for restaurants and the like so with my limited budget I set out for Goodwill in search of something. The funny thing is I usually fight against my wife's suggestions- like any good husband- and vehemently did not want to go to the store she kept insisting upon. So we pull into the parking lot cuz she always gets her way and I'm telling her how we won't find anything in this dump while she is telling me I'm going to come out with a nice jacket for 6 bucks.
We get in there and there's like 5 or 6 black blazers with satin lapels. These were obviously owned by a magician from the altered inner pockets and just the overall look of the jackets! haha! And they were only 4 bucks- so my wife was wrong! lol I'm considering getting some suspenders and ties for kid's shows. Does anyone else have favorite outfits or know where to get some ties/suspenders with magic themes? I've looked and all I can find is card themes- which will work. Thanks! |

I had a quick look around for you. If you only paid $4 for your suit jacket it might be a little (or a lot) beyond what you want to spend, but check out Geki's Crazy Quick-Change Suspenders. It's an effect you could probably figure out just by watching the demo, but I think it would go over well with children, which is what you wanted suspenders for.

Several years ago I bought a nice pair of suspenders with vintage court cards them. I also have a great tie with card pips on it, done in a graphic way.

Motown- I like the card themed ties. Those suspenders sound nice! |

It all depends. You can thrift store and come away with a decent purchase really cheap. Probably just fine for most restaurants (unless you're one of those guys trying to sell to a higher-class venue). But if you're looking at trying to get more expensive bookings out of the restaurant, it's well worth investing in a proper suit. Preferably a custom one, but at least head over to Nordstrom or the equivalent. People who pay the big money expect an entertainer either in a costume or in a suit that matches his fee.

Good advice! Going one step farther, hard to beat a tux. Lot of men don't realize they are frequently cheaper than a good suit as well. Even less from a tux rental store used. Always classy.

I work with a woman who buys the most amazing clothes at thrift stores at dirt cheap prices. She always looks very stylish.

Agreeing with Jim!
Years ago the man who owned Eaves Formal Wear also wanted to start a magic shop, and hired me. It was cool; for almost a year I went to work every day in a Tux, and he paid for the dry cleaning! Most folks don’t realize that you can purchase a Tux for about the price of two rentals. If you’re going to “dress up” more than a couple times a year, buy your own.

Preston 68, where is this place? Can you pick me up an extra extra lg.?
"Like a good husband?" Your whipped, just like the rest of us. Amazon has a lot of goodies for children like us. Just enter what your searching for in the box. Wives are always wrong!!!! But they get their way don't they???? Admit it, the wife is in charge and everything you'll ever want and need, you have to ask for her permission and advice. Welcome to the club.

I always figured my wife had great taste. She chose me, right?

Spartacus- I wear double x so these might fit you. If you seriously want one I can go back and see what they still have. And thanks for the Amazon suggestion.
DW- Exactly right! |

Yes I am serious. El Paso has nothing. And I don't care if it looks frumpy. It is my pretty face people look at. Take your wife with you and get her opinion.
I'll pay for gas, finders fee, the product and shipping, and you can take you wife out to dinner at Burger King. Seriously. Amazon has everything, costume wise, except stuff in my size. I bought a killer Bowler hat for $35 and they have all kinds of accessories for the entertainer. I even bought two garden globes made out of steel for a floating ball. Hocus Pocus in Fresno has color changing suspenders and maybe color changing vests. I think Abbott's had the vests which are imported from England.

If they had the jackets, they probably have the matching pants. Go back to the same Goodwill. Goodwill often splits up suits and sells them as separates. The pants probably cost $2. The thing about men's clothes is they contain a lot of extra fabric, usually, so they can be altered. Even if it doesn't fit just right, you can have the entire outfit altered to fit you perfectly for less than $20. Go back and get pants, man! LOL

I would, but I happen to have a pair of wool slacks that match perfectly Thanks tho- I'll keep that in mind for later- I would never figure that they would split up a suit.

There are some real deals in good clothing out there. But you will need to be open minded and prepared to take your time shopping.
