My name is Barry Reitman. So I'll start with an apology for my screen name. I read the guidelines after setting up my account (duh!) and then saw that it is strongly encouraged to use your real name. I've submitted a request to make the change.
My interest in magic/mentalism is tangential. I teach, speak, and write about memory skills. Many years ago I developed a mind-reading effect that has never failed to knock people out. I give the audience (at speaking gigs or classes) the phone number of "The Mind Reading Institute," in another state, and the audience selects a random 3-digit number. Then a volunteer from the audience calls the phone number, and the person who answers tells the volunteer the 3-digit number. It's pretty effective (he said, humbly). But I am not a professional performer. So, consider me an interested and respectful lurker. What I've seen here so far is fascinating, and I'm looking forward to learning a lot. I teach mnemonics at the community college adult level, as well as at the NYPD Police Academy. That's my car in the picture -- don't mess with me! Barry Click here to view attached image.

Welcome to the Café. My wife parks like that a lot.

Cute, Spartacus! Thanks. I posted that same picture and the "Don't mess with me" caption on my Facebook page. The Commanding Officer of NYPD's Executive Training Unit sent me an email saying, "Be careful what you boast about. Most of the cars on our sidewalk are waiting to be towed to impound."
And, if I may do a bit of shameless self-promotion, my book is free today and tomorrow on Amazon as a download for Kindle, iPads, iPhones, Droids, PCs and all devices using the free Kindle app. Click here to view/download attached file.

Hmm. It was a PDF of the press release (with a font selected to keep the file under 75kb). Oh well. Here's the webpage with essentially the same info about the free download of the book, including a link to info about how to download the various free Kindle Apps. Please at least read the Foreword on the Amazon "Look Inside" feature:

Thank you, Mary! Hey, as an "Insider," can you tell me how to expedite the change of my name from 'Memory Shock" to Barry Reitman? Thanks.

Yes, go to "The Magic Café Tech Help Area" and request a name change (a couple below "Our New Arrivals").
Be patient, it usually takes quite a while. This is a volunteer staff so they wait till they get several requests to be more efficient. -Mary Mowder |

I was able to download the Kindle edition to read on my PC. Thanks.
I am scheduled for memory evaluation later in July. My doctor says I am showing signs of memory loss but he is unwilling to attach an early Alzheimer diagnosis. I am the stage of walking into a room and forgetting why I went there. Bathroom is an exception, sometimes. I am also profoundly deaf and wear hearing aides, courtesy of the Veteran Administration. My wife calls it, selective hearing loss, this is when she tells me to do something and I forget. Really. Loud explosions seemed to be the culprit here, or standing to close to the loud speakers at Dead concerts. In any case I'll look at your book. I guess you know we have another "memory expert" here at the Café, Harry Lorayne.

@ Mary: Thank you. Yes, I've submitted that request.
@ Spartacus: Early in my book, I explain that I became "re-interested" in mnemonics when I suffered a profound and permanent short-term memory loss, due to a prescription drug that's since become subject of a major class-action law suit. This stuff should work for you. Correction: This stuff should work for your wife. Yes, I am a big fan of Harry Lorayne. I first read his material over fifty years ago. He's a legend in the field, deservedly so. I mention in my book that I still recommend his books and courses.

@ Spartacus: Another of my hobbies (can you say "dilettante?") is creating and hosting websites. I do it ONLY for friends and not as a business. One of the sites I developed is for my friend, author Arlene Romoff, whose life has been given back to her in the form of bi-lateral cochlear implants. if you are considering them, visit with Arlene at http://www.listeningclosely.com. I'll be glad to give you her personal contact info if you send me a private message.
