I'm enamored with railroads too, since my Lionel days as a kid, but, if they ain't needed, they just ain't needed. To follow your logic, I posit that all the brain power that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates put into their empires, will one day be a footnote to the computer revolution. Not saying it's right or wrong, but just the way the world works.

I'm still mad that they turned the Oregon Trail into I-80. Pretty much destroyed what was left of the covered wagon industry.

The Davenport Hotel here dodged a bullet a few years back. When I was in high school the Japanese owners were talking about tearing it down. It's registered historic, but apparently that honor is purely symbolic and offers no genuine protections. As a lover of our local history, I was very worried.
But then one visionary with a lot of money took a chance and bought it, fixed it up, and re-opened it. The Davenport is now, once again, our city's crown jewel.

Years since Route 66 was decommissioned, sections of it have enjoyed a revival of sorts. There are long stretches of it very near here that are traveled by those wanting to say they did. It is still known as Old Route 66.

I've driven on Route 66, on the way to the Grand Canyon from Vegas.

Watertown Plank Road is still a well used road here in town. But of course it's concrete now, not white oak. I've been trying for years to have it torn up and have the planks restored, but my efforts have fallen on deaf ears.
116 miles round trip. 3 days. |

What I remember most clearly about Route 66 was the coin operated foot massager in the little "Old West" town. By that point we'd been walking around Vegas for a couple of days...

Same old story I guess, he/she who has the gold makes the rules. That said, the tracks that were taken out of our town were in fact not being used for transportation and the pedestrian and bike path to town is an improvement because it's in a bucolic setting. The tracks and storage of cars were an eyesore in the middle of it.

Ironically or timely, or both, Arnprior is holding it's 150th anniversary celebration this weekend. The museum was open yesterday so stepped in and took a few pics, including a model of the town back in the day. Not surprisingly, I got a little caught up by those tiny cows. I'd like to get some of those for my magic, indeed.

Perhaps off topic a bit, but I live a couple minutes away from some historic railraod tracks. I like to walk along the them on a nice day and imagine what it was like riding on them in the day.

You're on topic, Jeff. And reasonable detours are also welcome.

I've ridden an antique train. I got very sick. I wonder when dramamine was invented?
Come to think of it, I've actually ridden two. But the other one (in a theme park) had modernized open-air cars so it was quite a bit different.

Riding a train is actually my favorite way of travelling, but sometimes it's just not an option. I've been fascinated by them since I was a little kid.

I was walking along there a bit today. I've been wondering if they've been finding any other interesting souvenirs while digging up the tracks.
