Looks like this will be the third Penguin lecture I'm buying now. Always loved Dan's work. Great to see him on the ball tearing it up big these days.

Some hits. Some misses. Some jokes about blow.
I heard rumors he was going to make a cash register disappear, but apparently he doesn't perform that one any more (too soon?). But all and all a fun lecture. well worth the asking price. Favorites: Dirty Doodles (although it didn't work out perfectly, I love the doodle revelation!), Toast and Guess the Sucker. Nice job, Dan.

Platt, too wordy on the joke. "Disappear" is a poor choice. "Vanish" flows better.
Dan pokes fun at his past much better than anyone. Magicians in general aren't funny. Watch them on TV and you cringe. |

I loved all the magic he taught. Like Zombie magic said, the coke vanish was just mindblowing. I was going "Oh ok it's a...oh no...Ahhhh it's a...ahhhh heck I have no idea." I love being fooled and this one killed me.
His mini talk on premise and staging was really fantastic. I would pay for a lecture of that stuff only. His easel with the pictures of what was next was just incredible. I think that could actually be really good in a regular show. Ham it up like an old vaudeville act. 3 solid hours with every question answered in a full, no holds barred way. Dan Harlan is a GIVER!!!!! James

Since we're in a public forum, I will explain it cryptically (it will only make sense if you've seen it): Full deck and a 5 and 10 from a matching deck. Carefully cut out center six pips from 10, discard the rest. Very, very lightly mist the back of the "center pips" gimmick with 3M Super77 Spray Glue and allow to dry. Attach "center pips" to the dupe 5 so they are removable. Set deck with normal 5 on bottom, normal 10 on top, prepared 5 second. To perform, cut, break, riffle to 5, return, break, pass, show 10, switch (TC), revolve card by holding corner pips, change by removing center, hide behind card (matching back design), show both sides, steal, and hand out. Makes sense to me! I hope it does to you, too! --Dan Harlan PS-- Platt... Plaaaaaaaat... very funny! I've only done the Cash Register trick once & even I never saw it! |

HA! I totally forgot about that trick! That was incredible. Another fooled badly. This lecture was really great Dan. Thanks for all your hard work.

James,
Based upon your review and recommendation, I purchased Dan's lecture. I only have been able to watch the first two effects and they are terrific. Dan is extremely entertaining and funny. He has a great stage personality. I look forward in watching the rest of his lecture. Michael

Michael, you will be blown away by "Passing the Coca-cola".

Clarke is right, the passing cola is killer. The method is unreal. Where does he get his ideas. I have never seen anyone use the method for cola passing, and it is brilliant.

I bought Dan's live lecture DVD last year. (the one with tightrope)
Is this all new material, or is there some overlap?

He could have only taught the Passing Cola routine and it would have been worth $19.95 ( to me ). I have enjoyed the live lectures, but I have watched Dan's lecture 4 times now. Dan raised the bar. He'll be a tough act to follow. |

So glad I bought this!
That was my first Penguin Lecture, but I really felt like I was there. So many magic dvd's are overproduced, so for me the "live feed" was refreshing! The material was top notch... I was just smiling at Dan's creativity. The Gypsy thread.... wow.... every little detail has been thought out. Thanks Dan & Penguin!

Thank you (everyone) very much for your comments on this project. It is a thrill for me to have my ideas so well received! I must admit I was somewhat hesitant to go live with some of the quirkier effects, but now I'm glad I did. Regarding what Tim Hannig said about the format being refreshing, I couldn't agree more... I love to perform live. Yes, it's a challenge at times, but it is truly the way magic is intended to be presented -- from start to finish, without all the fancy editing. Thanks to Penguin for giving me the opportunity! I had so much fun I may do it again some time.

Congratulations, Dan. It was an excellent lecture. I don't do stand-up magic but purchased the Penguin LIVE All Access Pass (an AMAZING value, IMHO, despite the IMX Live glitches) and watched your lecture. The creativity in your thinking is amazing and inspiring, even if I won't perform many of the effects. Thanks for teaching us the 10C-5C effect here! I thought you were keeping that one for yourself. Pretty terrific.
And yes, please do another one! |

Exactly Tim! I cannot stand pedantic explanations that take forever to tell you what a thumbtip is. Dan is concise and to the point. Great lecture. James Quote: On 2012-06-14 03:13, Tim Hannig wrote:

At the begining of the lecture I said that Dan was my favorite magician and this is one of the many reasons why.

I first met the girl who would become my wife in 1994, when I was hired to do a strolling gig.
That night I showed her Cardtoon. It worked, and we've been married 16 years. For that reason alone, I'm a Dan Harlan fan.
