Can you say Dumb and Dumber? This is why it's bad for stage hypnosis, and hypnosis in general for entertainers to think anybody can be a hypnotist.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/s......ool.html Even this so-called "mentor" doesn't seem to know very much at all. But hey, he had 14 hours of training, so that of course qualifies him to be a "stage hypnotist". This is everything that is wrong with hypnosis today, the lax attitude, and marketing to DJs and magicians, kids party entertainers, comedians, and anyone else that considers themselves an "entertainer", with the misguided belief the that anyone can be a pro stage hypnotist with little or minimal training, and that "things never go wrong during stage show, only in therapy. This is like the fourth or fifth story so far this years to make the news. Two weeks ago I read a story in a trade publication about a party planner (with absolutely no entertainment experience in his life) that decided to take a weekend course to become a stage hypnotist because he was tired of charging $1500 for a hypnotist, and having to pay $850.00 to the performer. "I realized that if I was the hypnotist I could double my profits and retain 100% of this income. Hypnosis is one of our most popular requested types of live entertainment, so I decided it was best for our operation for me to be the hypnotist." This was his advice to other party and event planners to increase their profitability. Absolutely terrible advice, pure gouging as a way of business operation, the over-simplified belief that anyone can do hypnosis, and of course with no regard to the industry, doing a quality performance, or safety. This is another example of the "mentor" spreading incorrect and misinformation in the media. This is 100% the fault, error and responsibility of the hypnotist, and not the students. |

Well, if this is a clip from the actual "show" it's pretty clear to me we have a hypnotist, no matter how incompetent, not able to take charge.
No wonder he encountered problems. http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/Canada/Mo......46422545 |

This is one of the worst performances as I've ever seen, This is not a show. Hew is not an entertainer, and I wouldn't even consider him a hypnotist. No stage presence, no command, no dynamics, nothing.
He's not playing to the audience, hell they can't even hear what he's doing. Not to mention great stage attire. This is a tutorial on how to be a terrible hypnotist! I cringe just trying to watch this. This is everything that is wrong with hypnosis today. As I regularly discuss here, being a good hypnotist entertainer requires both good hypnosis skills and understanding, AND good entertainer skills and experience If either are lacking results can be terrible. This guy has none and his instructor show be embarrassed. Many gurus and courses teach "just do it" "the only way to be confident is to just go out there and make it happen". I'm sorry, this was, is and always will be wrong. The worst thing one can do is go out before they are ready. This can destroy confidence and set a newbie back or even to the point of never attempting to do it again, even once properly trained. |

IS IT an oversimplified belief that anyone can be trained to do hypnosis?
I have always believed that to be true.

His trainer is a hypnotherapist instructor. This guy said that his student had at least 14 hours of training which is normally more than enough. Nuff said.

Normally? And hes doing body catalepsy with someone sitting on them? That might be normal for you RSD that's why hypnosis should be regulated to protect the public from irresponsible operators who don't care about the well being of their volunteers.
It will happen there will be an accident sooner or later that will hit the news. Its just a matter of time and a game of numbers. In meantime lets flog as many stage/ street hypnosis courses as possible after all its easy money. |

Your bringing of street hypnosis into this thread is purely so you can state how much you hate street hypnosis. When you slag off people selling couses I assume you include Reg Blackwood, Jon Chase, John Cerbone, etc in your slagging. Carry on, everyone's got loads of respect for you. Oh, hang on, no the other one. HK

Rule #1.....No one can 'get stuck' in trance or hypnosis. Remember this, explain this in your pre-talk and at the end of your performance, do a strong, invigorating awakening.
If someone doesn't emerge, here are your steps. What to do: 1. Use a stronger awakening & take control. 2. Ask the person why they are not awakening. 3. Lift their eyelids & blow on them. 4. Promise better feelings when they emerge. 5. Leave & go home. Nothing will happen to the person. They are choosing to do this. In my career, this has almost always been a high school student who is simply looking for attention, or recognition. -Tommy Vee |

...or is extremely tired or under some type of influence to begin with. I one had a student who on a graduation day knowing he be up all day and all night for the all-night grad party, took some kind of speed or upper early in the evening, then about 2:00 a.m. took a downer knowing the party would end about 5:00 am. He knew he wanted to be in the show and he also thought it would help him to relax and be hypnotized. I went on at 3:00 a.m. as the headliner of the event. Of course the kid was energetic, animated and responded well to the tests so I kept him. As the show progressed he responded well and remained quite deeply. 2 hours later at the end of the show, he was out. Sound sleep. No sleep in nearly 24 hours, and on a sleeping pill. Of course to the audience the all thought he was "stuck in hypnosis".
When the parents began to start getting concerned, I of course executed the above things Tommy Vee mentioned, and still nothing. I ended up getting his girlfriend to admit he had taken pills to cause this, and explained it had nothing to do with hypnosis, he simply went from being relaxed in hypnosis during the show, to sleep as the meds took action. I woke him up, he admitted what I had suspected, and all was fine, but I must say the key in having been properly trained and prepared for this. Keeping control, remaining cool and confident, and keeping the parents and audience from freaking out, while I did what I needed to do. To the audience it can be a very scary situation as they often think the worst, ranging from "he's stuck in hypnosis" to "OMG, he's dead!" It may sound crazy, but this is exactly how lay audiences, parents, administration and most others see it. Again the difference between being prepared and properly trained, and not being properly trained or prepared as with our above amateur. |

While I agree in most cases below will work but there are occasional cases where nothing below will work. People can get "stuck" in trance although at the very worst it will just turn into sleep and they will wake up naturally. Unless they have some underlying issue. But one thing I've learned is never assume anything like they are doing it for attention. Some might be but Ive seen others that clearly weren't. In this case all can do is observe that it made it to the media. And that's always a bad thing.

From the article:
"Whitbread said because his protégé is a young, attractive man, the girls could have been particularly influenced because they were keen to follow his directions." Justin Bieber's from Canada as well, isn't he? Hmmmm... explains a lot of the activity here in the US lately. |
