Payne-
I don't see How To Rap A Wag on the Knuckles available on Lulu. I only see your lecture notes (which I bought two years ago and which I was reading again last night). When, oh when will this be available? Some time back I saw a tease about a book you were working on called It's Not Bizarre to Me. Is this still in the works? -Patrick |

Master Payne is clearly (and successfully) whetting our appetites in advance; note that the publication date is 2013. Can't wait!

Writing is a lot more difficult than it should be and I now understand why so many people go the DVD route. I do have a supplement to my notes called "Tricks You Just Might be Able to Do" which I'll have a few copies of at the IBM and hopefully up on LULU shortly after that.

I'm not sure where to put this, but I figured since we're talking Ren Faires and SCA, this was as good a place as any.
Has anyone explored the idea of covering a sponge ball so it looks more "period?" I'm looking at Jeff McBride's "Bravo" routine (Benson Bowl) and the sponge balls are great but don't really look right. I've experimented already with cutting the stitching on a leather "Hacky Sack" sandbag and stuffing a 2" sponge ball inside. It seems to be compressible enough to still use, but it's a little loose. If I want to use these balls, I'll need to go up to 2.5" to help fill it out completely. Has anyone else experimented with "period" sponge ball substitutes?

Hi Dave--I've not tried this--YET--but it occurs to me that there are some really good faux spray paints out there that are also quite durable. You might try spraying a ball (hang it from a string first so you can get all sides) with an acrylic or vinyl paint that simulates a leather finish. Be prepared to completely ruin a ball or two (cheap enough)as I have never tried this--it's just an idea that seemed possible. In my head, the vinyl/acrylic should remain pliable enough to still work with.
Also, there is a forum here for Periods and Styles of Magic that I had hoped would have further Ren Faire guidance, but it is amazingly quiet. I find a lot more help here in Sleightly and in the Ropes amd Silks forums then have to adjust to my Ren character. |

I just use green ones and call the Muchnesses. To me the green ones look more orgainic. But then I'm probably just fooling myself. However if you are truly concerned just use sponges. The natural ones yiou can often get at makeup stores. these should work for a Benson bowl routine.

I really don't want them to look so... "spongey" if that's a word. So far the hacky sack experiment is working fairly well. It doesn't expand fully but that's due to an undersized sponge ball inside. New ones are on their way. I need to find a sports store that has at least four identical ones. That might be the hardest part.

Dave, you might want to try a set of bean bag type juggling balls. At least they would all match.

I thought of that, but they're mostly too big. That's why I went with "footbags". Some are stitched out of soft suede leather and look pretty good, sort of harlequin.
I just found pics of these which look even more promising:

Update:
2.5 inch spongeballs work perfectly inside a 2 inch footbag. The extra size fills out the ball so it expands quickly but it's still very compressible for manipulation.

Very cool. Thanks for letting us know what worked; so many folks ask a question, but never come back to share what the best answer turned out to be!

I see that I am about a year too late, but I just wanted to say how cool it is to see other SCAdians at the Magic Café.
As for me, my decision to get into performance magic is based on my efforts to develop my skills as a minstrel. I have played recorder for about 15 years. A few years ago I read the Southward (?) book on English minstrels and I was surprised to find out how versatile of performers they actually were. So I started looking through the various talents they possessed--things like (non-legerdemain) juggling, tight-rope walking, contortion, etc. Given I am not very well coordinated (I can kind of juggle two balls), big and heavy (I could do somersaults and cartwheels, but I could not stand on my head as a kid), and I don't own a bear, I decided that being a magician (jongleur/tregetour/juggler) was the way to go. So a few years ago I started researching period performance magic (the usual primary sources), but it went by the wayside as I had other things come up. But in May I was part of the SCA group at a small Renaissance Fair (fundraiser for a local library), and had a great time. But I would rather be on the performing end rather than sitting at an information table, so . . . I've been practicing actual tricks for the past couple of months, including cups and balls. As much as possible I try to use tricks from Discoverie and Hocus Pocus, Jr., but there are additional tricks I am working on that, though documented as period, use principles found in period works. There are also tricks that seem so obvious once you have studied legerdemain (for instance, disappearing objects in a bag), that though not documentated were almost certainly done. Finally, there are some tricks that are probably not period but which can be dressed up really well; these include several tricks I have gotten from the Fulve books and at least one I've gotten from Wilson. Anyway, more later. Henry le Tregetour |

Do not forget- that Master Payne has a wonderful book- if I remember (just hit 63 lol)- "Sometimes the tricks are just for me". if you do not have a copy I highly recommend the purchase.

If you want a "period" sponge ball, or, perhaps, a non-spongey-looking sponge ball, take a look at "The Cushions of the Princess," when it comes out as an e-book. Rezvani solved the problem quite well.
