I have read about cutting off the straight part a metal coat hanger, then filing it to a point. Coating it with Vaseline should make it work. Haven't tried it myself.

One variation I heard about a long time ago but never tried, was to sharpen the end of an uncooked spaghetti noodle by filing to a sharp point. You can be the only magician on your block to perform, "noodle thru balloon."
