Most of us use more than one method to control cards, force them, etc. That said, Christian Engblom's device is a definitive evolution of the deck shell. Someone in another thread remarked that everything you can do with The Cooler can also be done with a deck shell. This is simply not true. There is for instance an excellent prediction effect by R. Paul Wilson that simply cannot be done with a deck shell. Christian Engblom describes something he saw another magician trying to do that simply would not work which led him to thinking of a way to accomplish what this magician was trying to accomplish and that led to The Cooler. IMHO The Cooler is the most elegant deck switch I know of using an extra means. [Ack it's hard to make this clear on a public forum]. But is it "the best deck switch ever?" That question simply cannot be answered. Even if someone had mastered every known means of doing a deck switch, the answer would still be subjective. On a practical note I would hope that magicians would not just rely on one method for anything. Imagine a magician who relies heavily on a [ for his coins across routine and arrives at his gig and he has forgotten his [. Some may argue that it's not a big deal, that he should just do all of his other effects. But the better solution is to have a few other methods at the ready. Staying with the same scenario, this magician has remembered his [. But accidents can and do happen. During the course of the night something awful happens and the [ ends up looking like < or ~. He reaches in his pocket to get the [ and finds < or ~. Disaster? Yes if he doesn't have other methods. |

Can you use the cooler to switch a deck in and then out... so doing two deck switches? or can it only do one before it needs to be reset?
could you start out showing a real deck... then using the cooler to switch to a one way force deck... then using the cooler again to switch back to the real deck again? |

I would love to have this gimmick highly precision made, so it looked more like a real box, ... Kind of thinner metal/ aluminium..
Idea is good, but I am not FULLY convinced ; ) |

Maybe I'm just blind but I pick up my Cooler all the time from my office table thinking it IS a real box of cards before realizing it isn't when the deck is left behind. I can only assume that some are either nitpicking or didn't spend enough time making their gimmick. As for it taking someone 7 days and still not getting the switch down I would have to think they have a defective unit. In my opinion the basic "move" is almost self working.

I just have to rip this topic wide open again. Now I own this and before owning it I had been using the sleeving-top-it form of switching. But I seen this live in action and I just had to have it, now I owned my own Brick and motor shop for many many years so I can basicly say... I have seen it all sorta speak. Now I honestly had an idea of how it was done, as with many "MAGICIANS" that have watched it in action. But honestly even with knowing the secret the Cooler is a beautiful crafted gimmick if you may.
Now I will add this..although the tabled switch looks amazing,,i much perfer the in the hands switch that is described briefly in the dvd. If your going into one pocket for the unprepared deck to be shuffled and the other hand is going at same time for the Cooler, its just so casual and natural that not one person I have done this to,,and including Magician friends of mine..have not figured out that there was a deck switch involved...and I even tripped the method to my closes brothers and they said no F>N way. So take the time to make the gimmick look good and if your having a problem with the tabled switch stand up and do the in the hands switch.. I thought the price was perfect for this gimmick...as it will keep it the way we Magicians like it..SECRET! So that's my feelings on this not yours..but like anything in this art..its personal preference!
Grew up near one of the greatest minds in magic the late Stewart James, in a town called Wallaceburg just 15 mins from Courtright where James could be found, time and time again he would inspire me to always be creative and just love all magic.

I bought it, because I was curious how it works. I prefere the classic in the pocket or jacket switch. or the table switch, sitting at a table, I just grab the second deck on my knees, right hand laps the deck in an opening gesture (opening the deck) when the Left Hand comes in Play. Works like a Charm since ever! I'm a lapping junkee:))) I lap everything like Bottles, Forks, Cars, Tables, Elephants and also Spectators. It's just Fun to Lap everything including myself:)))

Got one last night. For years I've longed to let spectators shuffle before BCS card calling. Now it is possible, easy, and elegant.

I want to use the gimmick to switch a Tossed out deck (with one rubber around the short side) is that possible with the gimmick?

Do you need to look at the cooler when yo perform the switch? If yo have it do use it and have success everytime?
