I just listened to my first Joe Rogan podcast this last weekend.
It was an interview with Chael Sonnen and it was awesome. It was the honest, down-to-earth Chael, rather than the obnoxious (but funny) WWE style Chael. I knew Chael was funny and that he was smart (and a Republican, but two for three aint bad! ), but I didn't know how insightful he was; he really said some very interesting stuff. I think I'm going to buy his book. What do you think of Chael Sonnen? AND Any predictions for UFC 148? I'm leaning towards Chael winning, but I don't know. He clearly dominated the first fight. I don't think the TRT probably made much difference, but I wonder how much of a difference Silva's rib made. It seems unlikely to me that Sonnen will get caught very easily, so I feel like it's a matter of Silva really stepping up his game even though he won.

The JR podcast is awesome. A lot of people don't give Joe, Chael, Eddie and all the props they deserve. All of them are insanely intelligent, and like you said, Chael is hilarious and intelligent. I don't think he'll win though

He dropped punches on The Spider for 5 rounds with little damage, and never closed the deal. I don't think the fight went as well for Chael as Chael thinks it went for Chael.
My Uncle from Oregon says Chael is more subdued in the local media, but still an arrogant ***** I don't want to predict that Silva will win because with my terrible record for fight predictions it'd just jinx it...

I was leaning towards Chael, and I still am I guess, but Silva's recent threats got me questioning.
Obviously it is not literally possible to break an opponents arms, legs and teeth in one match; but the fact that he said that makes me wonder. This is, after all, Anderson Silva. I'm not sure how well Chael Sonnen actually feels about his fight, it's hard to get past the hype. In the podcast he said that immediately after the fight he was ashamed of himself and when he got the fight of the night bonus he thought they were feeling sorry for him. I'll say this though, I had already heard that Silva won by the time I saw the fight. I had heard from a credible source, ...and I STILL thought Chael was going to win by the end. He was just dominating (IMO) so much that I couldn't see how it was going to change. But, it is a good point about not being able to finish; and of course SIlva was injured, so if he's 100% and ready to prove a point he might just keep his promise.

I hope the next UFC is as good as the card seems to promise.
Regarding Joe Rogan's podcast, it's fantastic. You can learn more about life in show business in one episode of the podcast than you can in any number of magic books.

I've never been a huge fan of Sonnen going all the way back to the WEC days. But I love his interviews etc. And he is a great wrestler who has gotten better as his career has gone on. I think Sonnen might be in trouble this time around though. The only time I've ever really seen Anderson mad at an opponent was Damien Maia and it was a bad fight. Mostly because Silva toyed with, and mocked Maia, the whole time.
I really think Sonnen caught Silva off guard last time and I don't think that will happen again. |

I think it did, he referred to Silva as a "true champion."
I think it would be awesome if Sonnen stays in the UFC, stops trash talking (I like the rhymes though), and just talks normally. It be cool if he really worked on his submissions (like he has been) too. My first thought was: early stoppage. I still think it was (there is a lot that I want to see a few more times though), but it seems unlikely that Sonnen would have been able to do anything. Probably it would have pretty much looked the same if the fight was allowed to go on. The thing that bugged me (and I definitely want to see it again) was that stupid spinning backfist. I saw him drilling those in the open workout and wondering if he was going to really go for that. It seemed like he was attacking with it from the outside. I could be wrong, but if he did that seems like a terrible way to throw it. In such a big grudge match though I just don't want anyone to make a mistake like a slip. I want each fighter to do everything to their top ability and have a decisive winner. Still, Silva did a great job defending in the first round and capitalized on the slip beautifully; his knee seemed to slip right though Sonnen's hands and land right on the heart. ...could that be a secret Seagal jedi trick? lol

I don't mind trash talk. It seems to sell fights. Still, Sonnen takes it a bit far. I wouldn't mind seeing him toning it down just a touch.

The spinning backfist. Cool looking as hell; practical as a submarine with screen doors.
Too many Chuck Norris movies.

I can't completely agree on the spinning backfist.
It is absolutely responsible for knockouts, and is very effective as a counter to a committed attack. I remember back when I did kenpo I was told to stop using it in sparring because it was too dangerous (it was kind of a wimpy class). BUT, it is (as far as I know, not that I am pretending to be an expert) primarily a counter weapon and if I remember correctly (haven't seen a replay yet, I plan on watching it several times this evening) he used it to attack; and worse, to attack from the outside. That seems like a bad move in general, but worse against Anderson Silva. ...it would have been pretty fu**ing bada** if had landed that hard though!

As much as many of the MMA guys bad-mouth gung-fu, there sure seems to be a lot of Hong Kong movie style "secret technique" stuff going on lately.

Okay, I watched it again.
To me it looked a little better than what I thought I saw, but still not too great (still would have been badass if he had landed it). It was a right straight followed by a spinning backfist/elbow, but the straight did not connect and the spinning backfist was thrown to the same place, ...the place where Anderson Silva already was not. Ideally (not saying the I could do it, but just sayin') I think the spinning technique would only be thrown IF the straight landed solidly, at which point you might have that extra half second to build up the crazy power. I think it's on one of Bas Rutten's DVDs that he recommends throwing single punches primarily and then, only if that punch lands solidly, going into a combination. I think spinning elbows are covered in Anderson Silva's book, ...I wish I still had it. EDIT: LEFT, I meant a left straight followed by a (right) spinning backfist.

Any traditional martial artist will agree with that I think, and it's just as true with modern martial arts as well. When you get a guy who trains hard and realistically and has traditional techniques, concepts and strategies in his back pocket ...they work!

That's why I love Sensei Chinen so much. His karate is old-school but he runs his dojo like it's the military. Everything else seems easy after sweating it out with that guy.
