SO, I was thinking along these lines: let's make our own list of dangerous books. Let's take "dangerous" to mean something like, "resulting in some manner of social upheaval." I'm betting that in spite of our vast variety of backgrounds and religious or political inclinations that we can still come up with a list that most of the regular posters more or less can agree with.
I'm going to nominate two: 1. Charles Darwin, Origin of Species. I find it nearly impossible to overestimate the impact of this book. So much so that I won't even try to estimate it at all. But it certainly belongs to a list of the ten most explosive books of all time. 2. Immanuel Kant, Critique of Pure Reason. Almost everything wrong with philosophy today--as well as anti-philosophic intellectual schools of thought like deconstruction and critical theory--can be traced back to Kant. The book's impact in philosophy is unquestionable; the impact of philosophy on culture is, however, hard to estimate. But insofar as modern thought has been tainted by relativism (and the taint of relativism is on almost everything in the social sciences and the humanities) it is arguably Kant's fault. I won't make the argument here, because most of you don't give a smack about philosophy. Suffice it to say that it would get my vote for the most influential work of philosophy in modernity. Now, I could do a list of ten myself, of course. But what would the fun be in that? So, any nominations? Anyone want to disagree about Darwin and Kant? |

Come on, folks. You should at least be able to guess what I would pick as "The Most Dangerous Book Ever Written!" Catcher in the Rye is--literally!--kid stuff in comparison. |

Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason. It was, after all, a critique of what he considered to be the most dangerous book ever written.
Virtually any quote from it is guaranteed to start an endless argument here. |

We'll add it to the list. Once we get to ten we can start debating which books to replace the listed books. 1. Darwin, Origin of Species 2. Kant, Critique of Pure Reason 3. Paine, Age of Reason |

Yeah, but did anyone ever do anything because of it other than baking banana peels or swallowing several tablespoonfuls of nutmeg? But I'll keep my promise and add it to the list.
1. Darwin, Origin of Species 2. Kant, Critique of Pure Reason 3. Paine, Age of Reason 4. Anon, Anarchist Cook Book |

OK, but no real harm became of it, right? I mean, moral panic aside, did anyone ever kill anyone over it? Any social unrest because of it?

I think some degree of social unrest. It had an influence on many Hollywood and Rock people and those people influenced others. No real riots in the streets or anything, but a little.
I would also add all versions of the DSM.

Critter, no doubt the DSM has caused a ton of problems (and one would hope, has also offered a ton of help). But is it used outside the States much? Do you know? I'll add it anyway.

BTW: since this is my game, and since I'm a total control freak I'm going to insist on following my rules (LOL! Anyone who knows me is laughing right now) I'm gonna insist that once we get to ten, one cannot nominate a book without suggesting it replace one on the list. Got it?

The DSM is used worldwide.
I think it's an important, necessary, and much abused book
