From what I can find, no one knows for sure where that phrase came from or exactly what it originally referred to, but it never appeared in print before 1962, so explanations that are prior to that are unconfirmed.

I'd heard explaination for "whole nine yards" that was one mentioned in link provided. Ammo belts in (most) Allied fighters were 27 feet long (9 yards). If they engaged an important target they wanted to make sure they got it, they fired all their ammo...hence, they gave it "the whole nine yards". The phrase grew to mean giving it your all to accomplish something.
