Greetings everyone,
so here is the senario: You have a routine show comedy hypnosis about 60 mins to 90 mins (can be clear or adult). New in the city. No contacts, No money to renting any venue or bars, got 10 DVD promos, just for the hell of it NO shelter and 2 dry cat food cans. Goal first survive, second be the BIG Headliner act in town. How would you got about ? Or maybe if you are already an ENTERTAINER like heu ...let say Vegas maybe you could share you story Cheers |

You find bars that want more customers you do a ticket deal at the door or you get paid a fee. You look for a threatre type venue where there is loads of foot flow. If possible find a theatre that is having problems such as they are closing early or have no shows booked. Approach them with a ticket deal. Then promote.

But how do you survive until the first gig?
Even Beaked Beans on Toast cost something unless you hypnotise the shop checkout person. 'This is not the credit card you were looking for...' You could always do some Street Hypnosis, MP and put down a hat to collect money.

Is this a financial advice board?
I really dislike the hypothetical questions. Why would you limit yourself to one city incidently? I can think of few who even try.

One city at a time because it takes time and money I guess to travel accommodation etc.
Shrub I don't think street hypnosis makes much money with just a little extra work you could set up better gigs. But right now in the UK its continually pelted down with rain its awful this summer. I wouldn't do it here in Edinburgh anyway because the council ruined Edinburgh festival etc years ago when they introduced a license to perform in the street for all performers. The police would be down on you pretty quickly. I'm not in favour by the way we used to see some pretty bizzarre and interesting things on the street. Not any more its the same type of acts every year now. I have survived on the streets in Sydney doing caricatures many years ago on a working traveling holiday. It was a scary existence. I would keep off the streets if possible. |

In my opinion performance hypnosis shouldn't be used to make a few dollars to buy a tin of beans. Hypnosis should always be used to bring in the serious money by serious performers who have been trained properly. If you need to focus on buying a tin of beans you aren't ready for performing hypnosis. Make some money another way.
It saddens me that the street phenomena has framed hypnosis in such a devalued way. |

Ok so next senario :
you manage to find a bar that has an open mic night. They`ll go with a ticket split 50/50. However you have to promote it the same night. They`ll give you food (one burger with fries and a beer free. >must have taken pity upon me....< no wait a mintue this is only a story...) Now after finishing your meal, you still have to promote it. So again no money: your 10 dvds promo and the flyers at the bar. How would you process ? |

Why waste your time and effort for so little? As MP said, take your time and effort and put it into a theater or something that has a chance to turn into something, that can give you some press and media coverage and has a chance to profit decently, lead to profitable return bookings or other leads.
These questions sound like entry level questions. Have you done any performances before or just starting out? If just starting out, I would stay away from the theater idea. Tell us about yourself. Are you a hypnotist or magician? |

You got a point but to rent a theater to do a show cost about 2 500$ for a night. Money that I don`t have. Banks will not give me $$ cuzs not assets to give as collateral. Sure I can always make some flyer or maybe do a press release but to start the media coverage plan I need a theater. And theaters well in my country are not interested into doing a split ticket (one as to forwall the production).
If you have any suggestion by all means share. |

As for the previous question I am starting out only 4 shows under my belts (still the routine lasted for about 1 hour or so) and I am an hypnotist.

If they have a function room even better ( infact that's all I would do). You offer to do a ticket deal. You get 100% of the door takings they get money from drinks. You pick a busy night normally Friday or a Saturday. You give them posters and tickets to sell behind the bar. You give at least six weeks build up time. You put a few posters up in nearby public places. You repeat as many times as possible over the next 7 days. Soon you will 10 gigs lined up with potential to make real money. Theatres: you look for theatres that are struggling two examples for me were a cinema with a stage that had stopped doing its late night viewings. This means the manager will be desparate to turn things around and will bend the rules to help you. In this case it had 1000 seats and minimum of 7000 people attending movies every week. The place was plastered with posters and at least 20,0000 probably many times that walked past the cinema every week seeing my headline outsude and posters on the glass doors. I h ad to pay for the hire but they took the money from the ticket sales so I never paid anything out of my pocket. It sold out for three years. Another example found a major venue for music and comedians. It normally turned into a nightclub late in the evenings. But I noticed it lost its late license to operate as a night club and was lying empty after 10pm. They paid for everything posters press advertising put me on their email list on their website next to acts like Penn & Teller etc etc etc.. It cost me NOTHING. Use your brain. |

Again it depends upon where you are. I think the theater still applies here if you can find the right one. But just a few days ago I drove through a couple of small villages near me where I had done shows many years ago. And within a five - ten minute drive counted four pubs/hotels that were boarded up. And its the same everywhere you go over here.
Life is hard for a lot of people and they don't go out like they used to. |

I would like to thank everyone that took the time to explain to me how the business part of showbusiness works, espacially Mr. MP for the details.
Thank you ! I'll aim for theaters or bars (no open mic nights ) or hotels. Thank you once again for showing me the path. Cheers. |
