Not enough info in this article to know if the situation is similar but I thought it worth posting...

Another mail from the campaign that may be of interest...

<quote>
There have been some key developments in the campaign to overturn Liverpool Council's new busking policy since I last wrote to you. Firstly, the Guardian published this article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/the-northerner/2012/aug/09/liverpool-buskers-licence-law) about the undue influence of the Business Improvement District in Liverpool on forming policy and the privatisation of our shared public spaces.

Then, the story went national when the Mail online picked up on the 'Simon Cowell Clause', the part of Liverpool's policy that empowered civic officials to stop performances solely on the grounds of personal taste: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-......ity.html

In an enormously significant development Kirwan's Solicitors in Merseyside came on board with legal support to the campaign. They have served Liverpool City Council with a pre-action protocol letter notifying them of our intent to challenge the policy in the courts by means of Judicial Review. This is a legal mechanism that allows judges to strike down unjust policies. Follow this link for more details: http://www.liverpoolconfidential.co.uk/News-and-Comment/Exclusive-City-council-faces-legal-action-over-busking-rules.

We are still awaiting a formal response from the Council to this legal action. It is our hope that Liverpool Council will now abandon the policy formally and take up the offer of the Musician's Union to be part of a genuine consultation that benefits everybody, and most importantly, the City of Liverpool. Ultimately, we want to work with the Council to help them see the benefits of a vibrant street culture.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. This petition has helped our voices be heard in the corridors of power and has made a real difference on the streets of Liverpool. Encouraged by the campaign, people have carried on performing in Liverpool, without signing up to the council scheme. But they do so with the threat of prosecution for 'trespassing' still hanging over them until this policy is dropped. We want performers and artists to be safe from the fear of prosecution for trespass in the public spaces that ultimately belong to us all. That is why the campaign will not be over until the Council formally abandons this policy and starts again.

Thanks again!
