The nice part of the story is that his fellow co-workers have resigned as a show of solidarity.

Liability culture gone mad. It is worse in the UK, however, where lifeguards allowed a man to drown in 3 or 4 feet of water:

Saw this on TV this morning. I'd imagine this guy will have a few job offers coming his way. His dedication to life speaks for itself.
If I was that drowning man, I'd sure be glad he broke the rules.

Yeah, totally agree Michael.
As much upside I'm sure this has for the lifeguard, I'm sure it will have at least as much downside for the company. It's one thing for companies to get behind a "liability management" message in the face of abstract risk, but it's a terrible story after the fact. Looking back, pointing to a guy who survived a clear and present risk of death vs. some abstract risk of some kind of liability that never happened, it's just not credible. Firing other lifeguards because they won't agree to let people drown if a rescue would be against company policy takes it to a whole new level. Someone get that company a PR firm, pronto... |

Yes, Stone. Let's hope it never gets that far gone here in the USA, or anywhere else for that matter.

Yes Santa. You are amongst friends.
To get back to the story at hand... It is an appalling disgrace to humanity when politics, policies, liability issues and rules triumph over the sanctity of human life. I would never hesitate to help someone in dire straights regardless of whatever rules stand in my way. Let them fire me. I don't care. We can always find other jobs. The 'victim' only has one life. Horrible - the British story was so bad. Hard to believe someone will stand there and watch someone die. How could you live with yourself if you obeyed the fire officer and stood by?
I trained as a lifeguard, and many of the guys I trained with jumped into very dangerous waters in almost suicidal attempts to save lives. They are heroes. The ***s who watched that English man die should all be put up against a wall and shot.

Hi ringmaster, I guess you didn't read the stories from Britain.
Here's the difference: in Florida, a lifeguard was fired for saving a man's life. In Britain, a man drowned in 3 feet of water, 20 feet away from firefighters and paramedics who watched him struggle. Do you think it has gotten as bad in the US as it has in Britain? |

Awful story, gdw. Many ugly things in there. It looks like California is as bad as Britain.
