Wow, adding more subjects at the second half of the show. Interesting. Not sure I'd care for it myself, but I can see it being an interesting possibility.

I would never even do a show with 2 halves this day and age for an American audience. Almost every Vegas show I can think of has abandon that format.
The only reason it exists in Branson is to sell you crap at the half, and for older people to go to the washroom. I wouldn't like the half because of time spent recapturing the audience.

I agree, especially with hypnosis. You would lose momentum. The only time I would consider this is for a two act show, first half mentalsim, intermission, second half hypnosis. Yes, I haven't seen a two half stage hypnosis show here in years, and even then just one or two that I could think of, and they did indeed lose momentum and never totally regained it.

I'm located in the US.
So far, I've been doing mostly small shows at bars/clubs. Most people I've worked with has been six. Would like to get it up around 12-14. I've not been trained in stage hypnosis (however, I've been a magician/mentalist for years) and I've attended a street hypnosis training and I am a certified therapist. I love stage work and would like to ease this learning curve as much as possible. You guys have been sharing some absolute gold around here lately and I'm so grateful for your generosity. |

I love the idea of a two part show, opening with mentalism and closing with hypnotism. But I have seen hypnotism shows with an interval, and they have worked well. I have also seen hypnotists bring up new volunteers for the second half, and that can work very well.

You would not find an American audience to sit through it. At least not regularly.

You might be right Danny but then again I am sure there are shows that last a couple of hours that Americans do go and see regularly that are not hypnosis?
I used to do a two part show around the social clubs that had mentalism first and hypnosis second. That worked well and I got paid for a whole evening's entertainment. 2 hour hypnosis shows could only work in large venues where you can have a more complex show. The bar was full of hypnotic caracters at half time. All of my theater shows were two - two and a half hours long. And sometimes the audiences sat in their seats and didn't want to leave on the exceptionally good shows. |

I must say, it's nice to finally get some stage hypnosis topics and conversation going on around here.
I think it helps everyone to recognize the difference in stage hypnosis presentations and expectations depending on where you are located. Here a 90 minute to two hour stage hypnosis show is not uncommon, but just as one continual performance, no breaks or intermission, no added subjects in mid-show. Staging obviously seems difference, as here it is theaters, fairs & fests, casinos, comedy clubs, resorts, and school events (not schools), colleges, while other places it's pubs, bars or banquet rooms. Training also follows suit. In the states the stage hypnosis training is geared towards performing this type of show. Over there it seems to be more brevity oriented, with interest in new techniques, advances - rapid inductions, quick routines, less subjects resulting in less going on at once, etc. I think that is why we hear so much about hypnosis without trance, hypnosis without induction, (and lately hypnosis without venues-lol) or newfangled methods. Over here I don't think there is as much of a concern or movement to condense, streamline, change or better the use or application of hypnosis. Our performers, perform, and typically are not worried or concerned about advances, new methods and techniques, etc. Here most shows have sound and effects (soundtracks, sound effects) some use props, and accessories. They are productions, even those in clubs, or non-theater shows. Most shows are typically easy to get subjects depending on the market and everyone expects a hilarious and amazing show. Audiences will come back over and over again in many public situations. Many not from here seem to think that we have a strong corporate market for stage hypnosis. While there are some that like this, most that I know stay away from corporate events and they can often be the least fun and more reserved audiences. Most here don't consider anyone who does street hypnosis a hypnotist and they aren't taken seriously. Hypnosis on t.v. here is rare, maybe a few times per year, which I think is great as stage hypnosis plays strongest for a live audience. It can play well on t.v. if presented and produced properly. I think this is the type of stuff that can helpful to new guys trying to get a better understanding and to find their own direction. |

Las Vegas figured it out. No need to keep them that long. Who cares if you can or not? What is the point? Get in get on with it and get out.
90 as a rule here is a fine benchmark. It is not as if they see a "better" show just because it is longer. There is absolutely no need to keep them even if you can sustain it. Movies are hardly 2 hours any more. The culture has changed.

I don't know Danny most films I see are well over 2 hours these days. We must be seeing different movies. Las vegas may have figured it out in terms of keeping the foot flow moving through but that doesn't mean audiences won't sit through a longer show. Its the same in Edinburgh Festival most shows only last 45 mins - 1 hour. Only because they want to push people through like sheep to make as much money as possible. But the bigger shows in general last two hours on average. Im pretty sure an American audience would sit through a two hour show as Mindpro has suggested. in fact I had many Americans at my show in the festival who sat through it and even volunteered.
It could be a lack of market and opportunity that has led to the street phenomena. But I believe it has had more to do with the Derren Brown success and copy cat wannabees. I don't think anybody who wants to learn hypnosis seriously wants to go down the street direction. In fact I have had quite a lot of pms over the last few months asking me about training and where to go rather than train with some of the street companies. A few of them have trained with the few street operators and have now realised that's not what they want and that there is a lot more to learn. I think the street thing is on its way out. Even if its not I see it as a completely separate phenomena from stage. I would say that the stage industry here was very similar to what Mindpro has outlined but of course we are a much smaller country so opportunities were less. And even more so at the moment due to the recession. It has hit the entertainment industry here badly with bars clubs and hotels closing every day. Its very sad. Although I sense there is an underlying interest in stage recently Ive been asked twice this week about doing shows. I think with the right venues it could be successful here right now. I am not in a good place at moment to give it a go though but might be in near future. I don't think anybody here takes street hypnotists seriously either. And to be fair there aren't that many about most people have never seen one. Last year just out of curiosity I attended a meeting. I have to say it was a pretty pathetic affair. Not even as bad as I thought it would be much worse. It was embarrassing. I think its on its way out and was never really epidemic anyway. It will disappear I would think over the next year or so. It certainly has on here. I would like to get out of this country all together I could. |

Is a 2 1/2 hours show better than a 90 minute show just by virtue of the fact that it is longer? Of course not.
Like I said American audiences are not geared for that. Phantom in Vegas is 90 without an intermission. The intermission has gone the way of the Do Do Bird in Vegas. I am not certain about Broadway. Why fight it? There is literally no point.

Thank you so much for the information. I never expected so much. I am really energetic and I can be on stage no problem. I was a member of Junior Chamber International so I can talk in front of a crowd and I have done theater. I just have to learn to work the crowd by learning. Let's say that I would be willing to travel to take a hypnosis class, who should I learn from? Who is teaching the best stage hypnosis today?

That depends on the type and style of stage hypnosis you are interested in, and how far you are willing to travel. I've taken many trainings and continued education, but nothing has really been that interesting to me the last few years. I've always wanted to get some training in Europe but have not yet found anything that blew me away. When I did find one or two that seemed a possibility, upon closer looking, they were U.S. hypnotists/trainers just doing a class or seminar over there. Decisions, decisions. Maybe MP could be persuaded? Does McKenna do trainings? I know he tapping into the weight loss hypnosis heavily lately. Just saw him this week pushing that.

I would go to America to learn. Which is the best over there? No one is generalizing, it's all just your opinion of who is providing the best training. I am not looking for old school training. I have seen excerpts on youtube from Jerry Valley and I don't like how he presents it. I have read a lot on stage hypnosis. What I am looking for is to awe the audience from the beginning and that is why I look up to Justin Tranz, he is fast, high energetic and funny. Now, I am not saying that his training is the best or that I should indeed go to his training. I just NEED to be sure that the training I get is going to be worth the trip and the money investment since it's going to be harder for me to travel than the average Joe who lives in the states. So I need to know who is giving the best training in your opinion. I hope you guys can help me and I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

From what I understand Jon Chase offers good training in stage hypnosis. If I was seeking training in stage work, he is probably the guy I would go to. He is in the UK.
If I was going to America for training, Justin Tranz is probably the guy I would look for. He has an engaging stage persona.

The difference between an hour and a two hour show is quite a lot in terms of being able to do "bigger" things" its more of a theatre show than a smaller show. It just makes a better show nothing to do with time. |

I would be persuaded to do a training and am currently considering a few different options. Stage persuasion and Performance Enhancement programmes. I have turned down a few requests in the past but the time might be right to think about training.

I guess the only real difference is we had a break. The venues liked this because they made a lot of money at the bar during the break. And it is a chance to see close up the "performers". The hypnotist didn't go to the bar. So not that much difference really.
