That is the question.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

So our cars don't get towed away.

Cities need revenue, and parking tickets are a good source of revenue.

Cities need available parking, too; the possibility of fines, and having to pay to use the available parking helps keep spots open. Your mileage may vary on this, but I'm in Southern California.

We shouldn't pay them. Every city needs a certain amount of free parking to drive traffic to the shops and businesses in the centre. Remove free parking and business migrates to the malls in the suburbs.
I don't pay parking fines. I let them build up. Eventually the city sends a cop to my door, and I send him away. Once every couple of years I will show up at the prison, and do my time - normally about four or five hours. Then the cycle begins over again. If there is limited parking that is one thing. But most cities use parking as a revenue stream - and there are more honest ways of a city to raise funds.

What gets me is that on my block there are signs "No parking Thursday 11:30-1PM." This is supposedly so that the street sweeping trucks can come by and clean. Inevitably however they come by and sweep at 5:30 AM, and are nowhere to be seen at the scheduled time.

I thought the reason we paid parking tickets was beause the penalty kept getting bigger and bigger for non payment until you owed 10 bazillion dollars and your first born if not paid on time.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Where I live you will eventually get arrested for not paying your parking tickets. That happened to a friend of mine who spent the ride in the cop car removing and replacing the handcuffs just for fun.
I hate the people that write tickets seemingly just to write them. Most parking should be free, it is good for business. I have no respect for someone who blocks a driveway or a fire hydrant, or parks in a handicapped spot without permit. These are the ones to be ticketed. Always a good laugh to take your parking ticket and stick it on someone else's car. Works great if the cop had poor handwriting. I hate the new computerized system. It is not possible to fake it with that one. Going back quite a few years, a group of thieves in a van with no identification on it, spent the evening cleaning out the change machines in a series of 6 parking structures near here. Six structures, five floors each, two change machines per floor... They fed xeroxed counterfit $5 bills into the machines. Today that would no longer work, the machines can read the bill much better and look for specific markers on the bill itself. Lots of people had a good laugh though as that city has a repution of giving you less than two minutes at an expired meter before you get ticketed. The thieves did a lot of work for a high risk job with low yield return. They made off with about $2000 or so. Most people thought it was about revenge and not about money.

Both are fun if you do it right! |

Note, that's a HUGE difference than "privatizing" it, where the governmetn just grants a privat company a monopoly on parking. Do not get those two confused.
